With new original game announcements, reprints, and Gen Con 2023 plans, Darrington Press’s inaugural “State of the Press” YouTube video was full of excitement for fans.
Featuring Matthew Mercer and Mica Burton, the State of the Press for Critical Role’s publishing arm revealed three new games that will join its portfolio of tabletop titles.
In Queen by Midnight, players become princesses competing to become queen of the Midnight Court in a massive battle-royale. Each princess has their own unique deck, which players modify during the game to advance their strategies until the stroke of midnight when only one can be chosen as the new Midnight Queen.
The game features a rotating clock tower centerpiece that records game rounds and manages the cards used in play. It includes 275 cards plus tokens, trackers, and player boards. Queen by Midnight was created by Kyle Shire and is intended for 3 to 6 players, ages 12 and up. Games take a little over an hour to play. MSRP is $69.99.
Illuminated Worlds will be a d6 dice-pool-based tabletop role playing game, designed by Stras Ascimovic and Layla Alderman. It is intended for shorter campaigns driven by flexible story arcs and is setting-agnostic.
Daggerheart on the other hand is built for longer fantasy-themed campaigns. Details on both titles will be released closer to launch.
The State of the Press also revealed that the previously announced Guardians of Matrimonia is set to officially release early next year. This game of fantastical wedding planning was originally designed for Matthew Mercer and Marisha Ray’s wedding. More details on the project will be available closer to the launch.
Furthermore, The Chronicles of Exandria I: The Tale of Vox Machina, and The Chronicles of Exandria II: The Legend of Vox Machina art books are both receiving reprints under the Darrington Press banner this year.
With these new games, reprints, and Gen Con plans for later this year, Critical Role fans will have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
