The 64 Bit  Era for DDO:

DDO is taking a significant step forward with the introduction of 64-bit servers. This transition promises improved performance, stability, and potentially new features. Let’s dive into what we know so far.

Key Points:

  • No Commodore 64 or N64 Port: Don’t worry, this isn’t a nostalgic throwback! (Severlin has jokes!)
Gradual Rollout: DDO is taking a cautious approach, starting with test servers and a VIP-only launch.
New Datacenter: The 64-bit servers will be hosted in a new datacenter in Las Vegas, potentially impacting ping times especially for EU players.
DDO Store Purchases: Your existing DDO Store purchases will carry over to the new servers.
Optimized Memory Usage: DDO is leveraging caching techniques to enhance memory efficiency.

64 Bit Test Server:

Character Copies: A free “Character Copies” event will allow players to stress test the 64-bit server.
Lammania Game Launcher: The test server will be accessible through the Lammania Game Launcher.

After the test, this will be a new character only server, you won’t be able to copy or transfer chars over, your starting from scratch.

First Live 64-Bit Server: Cormyr

VIP-Only Access: Initially, Cormyr will be exclusive to VIP members.
Long-Term Server: Unlike traditional hardcore servers, Cormyr will remain active for an extended period.

Lanterns in the Mist Event:

The server launch will coincide with the Lanterns in the Mist event, themed around Mist of Ravenloft.

  • Claim Lanterns:
  • Players can claim up to five lanterns at level 1.
Trinket Slot: Lanterns are equipped in the trinket slot.
Mistwalker Visibility: One lantern allows players to see Mistwalkers, but it cannot be destroyed.
Perilous Lantern: Equipping a second lantern makes it destructible upon death, potentially destroying other lanterns as well.
Progression: Reaching certain levels and completing goals is required to progress through the event.
Opt-In: The lantern system is optional, allowing players to participate in the event without the hardcore risk.
    Mistwalkers:

Hostile Mobs: Mistwalkers are similar to the Hounds from previous hardcore events (This was not totally clear, but seems to be the case)
Level-Based Spawning: Mistwalkers will only appear to players within a specific level range.
Lantern Requirement: A group member must have a lantern equipped for Mistwalkers to spawn.

DDO Servers Future of 64-Bit:

DDO’s plans for 64-bit servers extend beyond the initial launch. The goal is to eventually create new servers with free transfers for all players. However, this depends on the success of the test servers and the overall performance of the 64-bit infrastructure.

Key Challenges:

Character Transfers: Issues related to guild transfers, Monster Manual transfers, and character serialization need to be addressed before widespread transfers can occur.

As DDO continues to evolve, the introduction of 64-bit servers marks a significant milestone. While the future remains uncertain, the potential benefits for players are undeniable. Stay tuned for updates as DDO shares more details about its 64-bit plans.
