Chaosium Stands Firm Against AI-Generated Content

In a clear statement amidst the ongoing debate about AI’s role in tabletop RPGs, Chaosium has reaffirmed its commitment to human-created content.

Chaosium, the renowned publisher behind games like Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest, has unequivocally stated its opposition to the use of AI-generated content in its products. In a recent blog post, Vice President Michael O’Brien shared a section from the company’s FAQ, reiterating their stance and highlighting the importance of original, human-created work.

Chaosium’s Contracts: A Human-Only Affair

The company’s contracts explicitly require that all submitted art and writing be entirely free from AI involvement. This commitment reflects Chaosium’s belief in the value of human creativity and the potential ethical implications of AI-generated content.

A Divided Industry

While Chaosium’s stance is clear, the tabletop RPG industry is far from united on this issue. Hasbro, the parent company of Dungeons & Dragons, has expressed its intention to embrace AI for its games. On the other hand, Wolfgang Baur, CEO of Kobold Press, has firmly stated that AI will not be integrated into their products.

Chaosium’s Concerns

Chaosium’s decision to avoid AI-generated content stems from several key concerns:

Impact on Artists’ Livelihoods: The company recognizes the potential threat that AI could pose to the livelihoods of artists and writers in the industry.
Ethical Considerations: Chaosium is mindful of the ethical implications of using AI-generated content, particularly in terms of copyright and ownership.
Commitment to Transparency: By ensuring that all content is created by humans, Chaosium is able to maintain transparency and provide clear attribution.
A Human Touch

Chaosium’s decision to prioritize human-created content is a testament to their dedication to the craft of tabletop RPGs. By upholding this commitment, the company is not only supporting the creative community but also ensuring that their games continue to be crafted with a unique human touch.
