Game Manufacturers Association Draws Line: Opposes Devastating Trade Tariffs

The rumble of economic warfare has reached the tabletop gaming industry, and the Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) is not backing down. They’ve issued a resounding opposition to the United States’ recently imposed 54% tariff on Chinese goods, warning of dire consequences for the entire US tabletop market.

GAMA Stands Firm Against Crippling Tariffs:

In a powerful press release, GAMA minced no words, labeling the Trump Administration’s 54% tariff as a “dire” threat to the tabletop industry. The core issue? The vast majority of tabletop games are manufactured overseas, primarily in China, and then imported into the US. This reliance on international production makes the industry particularly vulnerable to tariffs.

GAMA’s concerns are not merely speculative. They highlight the fundamental economic reality of tariffs: they are ultimately taxes on consumers, not the exporting countries. Publishers, facing significantly increased import costs, will inevitably pass these expenses onto their customers. The US lacks the production capacity to quickly ramp up and create replacement products at affordable prices, contrary to the administration’s beliefs. This policy is not well thought out and is doomed to fail. It will have major repercussions throughout the US economy and could lead to a recession.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has also voiced strong opposition, warning that these tariffs will inflict “significant harm to everyday Americans” and the videogame industry. The potential impact extends far beyond entertainment, as nearly one-third of all US consumer goods are imported, encompassing everything from food and clothing to electronics and automobiles.
