Revised Edition of Ace of Spades Returns This May
The board game world moves fast, but some moments leave a lasting mark. Last year, one of the most talked-about stories wasn’t about a massive Kickstarter or a hidden gem—it was about a major misstep and the road to fixing it.
Learning from the Dust-Up
If you followed the headlines during Gen Con 2025, you likely saw the controversy surrounding the initial launch of Ace of Spades. In an attempt to pay homage to the film Django Unchained, the designers included cards depicting an enslaved person and an enslaver.
While intended as a cinematic reference, the community’s response was swift and clear: the cards were seen as an inappropriate trivialization of the horrors of American history. Devir Games didn’t shy away from the feedback; they issued a formal apology and pulled the product from shelves almost immediately.
A Fresh Start in 2026
Fast forward to today, and Devir is ready to get back in the saddle. A Revised Edition of Ace of Spades is officially hitting retail in May 2026. This reboot maintains the core gameplay fans were excited about while completely removing the offensive content.
In this atmospheric card game, 1–2 players use poker-based mechanics to fight off the supernatural nightmares of the Wild West. Here are the quick stats for the new release:
-
Players: 1–2
-
Age: 14+
-
Playtime: 40 Minutes
-
MSRP: $24.99
New Challenges: Call of the Zombie
Devir isn’t just bringing back the base game; they’re expanding the world with the Call of the Zombie expansion. If the standard Wild West wasn’t weird enough, this 15-card pack introduces:
-
New Zombie Enemies: To keep you on your toes.
-
The Hellbilly: A formidable boss monster with four different versions to battle.
-
Price Point: This expansion will retail for $9.99.
It’s rare to see a publisher pivot this decisively, and it’ll be interesting to see how the revised edition is received by the community this spring.
