Devir Games Issues ‘Ace of Spades’ Replacement Decks

In a significant move toward transparency and community accountability, Devir Games has officially launched a replacement program for its solo-strategy card game, Ace of Spades.

Following a period of intense feedback and a full retail recall in late 2025, the publisher is now offering free replacement decks to ensure the game meets its standards for inclusive and respectful content.

Ace of Spades, a stylish Western-themed game that blends poker mechanics with boss-battling gameplay, initially made waves at Gen Con 2025. However, the excitement was quickly overshadowed when members of the tabletop community pointed out culturally insensitive and harmful imagery within the card art—specifically depictions of enslavement and racial stereotypes.

Devir Games responded swiftly, acknowledging that while the art was intended as a cinematic homage to films like Django Unchained, it was a “misguided” approach that trivialized historical trauma.

“We take full responsibility for the harm caused… our commitment is clear: to listen, to make it right, and to do better.” — Official Devir Games Statement

What’s in the Replacement Deck?

The new replacement decks aren’t just a simple fix; they represent a thorough revision of the game’s visual identity. Here is what players can expect:

  • Completely New Illustrations: The controversial “Slaver” and “Fugitive” cards have been entirely removed and replaced with new characters and art.

  • A Comprehensive Review: Beyond the primary points of concern, Devir reviewed the entire deck to ensure other character depictions—including those of Indigenous people—were respectful and non-offensive.

  • Expansion Sync: The replacement program aligns with the upcoming launch of the Call of the Zombie expansion, ensuring all players have a cohesive and updated experience moving forward.

How to Get Your Replacement

If you currently own an original copy of Ace of Spades (the “Gen Con” or first-run edition), you are eligible for a free replacement deck.

  • Where to Apply: Visit the official Devir Games replacement portal.

  • Cost: The deck is provided free of charge, including shipping for most regions.

  • Timing: Fulfillment is expected to begin the week of April 28, 2026, coinciding with the game’s official retail “reboot.”

With the replacement decks in transit and a revised “v2” of the base game hitting store shelves this May, Devir Games is looking to put the focus back on the gameplay that fans originally loved: the tense, high-stakes poker duels and the grit of the supernatural Wild West.
