D&D Boss Dan Ayoub Steps Up to Lead Wizards of the Coast

In a major leadership shift at Hasbro, Dan Ayoub has officially been named the new President of Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Hasbro Digital Games.

Ayoub, who most recently served as Senior Vice President of Dungeons & Dragons, takes the reins following a period of interim leadership by Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. Effective November 2, Ayoub will oversee WotC’s premier flagship brands—including Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and Duel Masters—alongside Hasbro’s expanding portfolio of digital video games.

A Lifelong Fan with 25 Years of Industry Experience

Unlike traditional corporate executives, Ayoub brings both a deep passion for tabletop culture and a quarter-century of AAA video game development experience to the president’s seat.

  • Game Industry Background: A veteran with 25 years in video games, Ayoub previously spent 11 years at Microsoft, serving as Executive Producer and Studio Head at 343 Industries (oversensing the Halo franchise). He also held key positions at major studios including Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Disney, and Certain Affinity.

  • Wizards Career: Ayoub joined Wizards of the Coast in 2022 as VP and Head of Digital Studios. He went on to lead digital partnerships and eventually stepped up as Senior Vice President of D&D, where he drove initiatives like the D&D Universes Beyond rollouts, D&D Icons, and expanded digital studio developments.

  • Tabletop Roots: Ayoub has shared that his connection to tabletop gaming runs deep. He has played Dungeons & Dragons with the same group of friends since he was 10 years old and picked up Magic: The Gathering the year it originally launched.

Leadership Perspectives & Official Quotes

Hasbro leadership emphasized that Ayoub’s deep understanding of gaming communities makes him the ideal choice to steer Wizards into its next era.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks on the Appointment:

“He understands what our games mean to the people who play them and what it takes to build great teams and experiences. His promotion reflects one of my top priorities: developing our people. I couldn’t think of a better match to lead these businesses, and I’m excited for the future with him at the helm.”

In response, Ayoub expressed his commitment to maintaining strong community ties and respecting the creative teams driving both tabletop and digital offerings:

Dan Ayoub, Incoming President of Wizards of the Coast:

“I’m honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, and grateful to Chris and the leadership team for this opportunity. Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We’ll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can’t wait to get started.”

What This Means for the Future of D&D and Magic

Ayoub’s background in both digital publishing and tabletop management highlights key priorities for Wizards of the Coast going forward:

  1. Bridging Digital and Tabletop: Having overseen internal studios (such as WotC’s Montreal team) and video game development, Ayoub is well-positioned to drive hybrid tabletop/digital initiatives, including D&D digital tools and standalone titles.

  2. Community & Creator Focus: His explicit promise to “put fans first” and “respect the artists and creators” addresses recurring community sentiment around transparency, artist recognition, and open communication across both franchises.

  3. Cross-Franchise Growth: Under Ayoub’s guidance as D&D VP, crossover initiatives gained significant momentum. Expect continued exploration of innovative product lines and strategic licensing efforts.
