Roll 20 Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes Review

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes is the newest book released for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, and of course has been added to Roll 20 as well,   If you are wanting some new foes to unleash against your players, then this is the tome for you!

When you purchase Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes via Roll 20, you will also get the introductory adventure “Rrakkma” Note that “Rrakkma” is only available to Roll20 Pro subscribers.

With your $49.95 purchase price Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes supplement will get you:

  •  Over 230 new monsters with character sheets, handouts, and tokens integrated into Roll20’s compendium.
  •  20 extensive lore entries that expand on Faerun’s races as well as abyssal lords, the Feywild, and the Gith.
  • 15 new player subraces including Tiefling lords, Eladrin, Gith, and Duergar.

The Adventurer’s League mini-adventure “Rrakkma” includes:

  •  1 5-ft grid map
  • 11 NPCs, 10 of which are from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes
  •  6 all-new pregenerated level 9 player characters, using the new Githzerai and Githyanki subraces

Purchasing the Tome of Foes will add this information to all your other existing roll 20 adventures, so if you are doing a “homebrew” game, you can use the foes or lore in that with ease.

There is a slight “Horror” demonic theme here,  These are star spawn horrors, hellfire engines, demon lords, and psionic warriors. Extradimensional beings, including those native to the Far Realm, the Feywild, and the Nine Hells. Fans of Stranger Things will love that the Demogorgon is also here, fully stated out. Good luck to you if you have to face this monster.

There are few new options here as well, the Gith (With variants) Duergar as well.

Roll20 has converted the new Adventurer’s League module “Rrakkma.” “Rrakkma” is completely free to Roll20 Pro subscribers (and only the host need be a subscriber). It features not only several fun creatures from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes but also six pre-generated player characters based on the new Githzerai and Githyanki player races.

“Rrakkma” is a pretty simple straightforward adventure which is not a bad thing, you start at the entrance to a dungeon with a simple goal: stop the Mind Flayers from completing a doomsday device. The Temple of Madness dungeon is linear and straight-forward. Since it’s designed to show off new monsters from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, it’s also very combat-heavy, with little room for dialogue, puzzles, or role-playing.  Everything here is trying to kill you, though some may have a little chat beforehand if you like.

Final Thoughts

As with all Roll 20 modules, all information is easy to get at your fingertips, if you are well versed with using Roll 20, you will be right at home and be up and running in no time. If you are new there is a slight learning curve, but there are plenty of guides and videos out in the wild that help you learn fast.

If you want to get up and running fast you can play the Rrkkma adventure with the pre-gen characters and be up and running in no time, which is a nice plus.  Keep in mind this is a small adventure and is very heavy on combat, so it might not be for everyone, but it will give you a good taste of all what Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes has to offer.

So, should you pick up this up on Roll 20? If you’re a DM I would say I think it’s essential. Yes, this is a MUST HAVE addition to your roll 20 arsenal, with so much lore, and monsters in here, this is one of those tomes, (See what I did there) that you must have on your roll 20 library,  It’s a healthy mix of knowledge and materials that both players and Dungeon Masters need, and will enjoy.

Head over to Roll 20 to add this to your online library now.
