Free League Publishing has announced a tabletop RPG set in the Alien universe. The game, titled Alien: The Roleplaying Game, will feature original stories set in the world of the 1979 sci-fi horror classic when it releases later this year.
According to the game’s official site, Alien will be set in 2183, after the events of Alien 3. Conflicts between rival areas of space have increased and distrust between the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and the United Americas is growing.
The game will include both the sandbox campaign mode — in other words, the traditional open-world RPG experience — along with a “Cinematic” mode that will feature pre-generated scenarios, which players have to complete within a single session. “Emulating the dramatic arc of an Alien film,” the announcement notes,
“These survival challenges promise escalating stakes and fast (often brutal) gameplay where most players aren’t expected to last the night.”
“The Alien saga isn’t about superheroes with superior firepower, It’s about placing ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and testing the endurance of the human spirit against inhuman atrocities and impossible odds. Such a harsh yet hopeful universe has captured our imagination for 40 years with good reason, and we’re excited to explore new stories and perspectives as players must face their demons (in a true and metaphoric sense) and brave the horrors of the unknown.”
Alien: The Roleplaying Game won’t be the first Alien tabletop roleplaying game, as Leading Edge Games published Aliens Adventure Game in 1991. While the Aliens Adventure Game was based on the plot of the second entry in the movie series, Free League Publishing’s RPG will have storylines specifically created for the game.
