“New Coke” Coming Back For A Limited Time In Honor Of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

When season three of Stranger Things drops on Netflix this summer, anyone born in the ’70s or earlier will recognize something: New Coke. The updated Coca-Cola, which launched in 1985 but never quite caught on with consumers, will make a cameo on the show’s third season, set in 1985. A limited number of fans, whether of the show or of the drink brand, can sip the nostalgic drink as they watch they show when it hits Netflix this July.

For everyone who doesn’t recall, here’s a quick recap: Coke created a sweeter version of their classic soda in the mid-80s. A few months later, after customers made their opinions of the new formula known with thousands of calls and letters, the actual classic recipe came back. In 2002, Coke II (as it had been renamed) was phased out completely. It is widely known as one the worst marketing and business flops to this date.

But this summer, a limited quantity of “New Coke” will be back alongside Stranger Things-branded classic Coke and Coke Zero bottles and cans.

An “upside-down” Stranger Things-inspired vending machine will also pop up in select cities this summer to dispense free cans of New Coke for a limited time.

So as not to repeat their previous mistakes—Coke told CNN the comeback is a way to “not take ourselves too seriously”—fans will get to try New Coke as a “gift with purchase” with any Stranger Things bottle purchases.
