Horrified Review

Horrified is a game where you will battle the classic universal monsters: Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Players team up to defeat the classic monsters before they overrun the town. They don’t make this easy as each monster has its own unique defeat condition, so working together is paramount.

Gameplay

Horrified, one to five players choose how many monsters they want to battle against (2 for easy mode, 3 for medium, 4 for difficult). They then choose a starting character at random, with each person having a unique special power at their disposal. On a turn, players first complete the Hero Phase where they can take several actions such as move, pick up items, share items, or advance towards the win condition as it pertains to each monster. For example, to defeat Dracula, players must first move to the four spaces on the board that contains coffins. Players can then trade in red items with total strength of six or more to smash the coffins. Once the four sarcophagi are destroyed, a player can confront Dracula by moving to his current location on the board and using yellow items with a total strength of six or more to defeat him. Each monster has it’s own “Mini Game” that you will need to do defeat them, some or “easier” than others.

Once a player has completed their actions in the Hero Phase, next is the Monster Phase. Here, players draw cards that indicate how many new items come onto the board, if an event occurs, and which monsters move and attack. Some events are monster-specific and only trigger if that particular villain is being played with. Others are universal, such as a villager coming out onto the board at a specified location. The players win if they beat all the monsters, but evil reigns if too many villagers are injured, or players get knocked out, or the players take too long to fulfill the win conditions and you run of monster cards.

Final Thoughts

This game is amazingly fun and well-designed, You HAVE to work together to have any chance of winning, this is a try Co-Op in the sense of the word. The abilities of each character can be leveraged in very specific ways in order to best benefit the team. Some character’s special abilities did seem to be a bit overpowered, nothing that would break the game, but if you get lucky enough to get a certain character, you might have a slightly easier time in the game.  Horrified has excellent replay value, each monster is completely different in terms of how they must be approached. Because monsters are coupled together in groups, the strategy changes with each play through, depending on what group of monsters you have chosen to battle.

I honestly cannot criticize much about Horrified, except perhaps I wish the cards were printed on a bit better stock, I’m not a fan of sleeving my cards, I know the horror! But I feel that this is a must for this game, as the cards a tad bit on the flimsy side, so I’m not sure how well they will hold up over time, if you don’t sleeve them, the review copy they sent I have played probably 10-15 times, and a few of the cards, do show some slight wear, nothing horrible mind you, just something to keep in mind.

Horrified is great fun for the whole family, it’s easy to teach and learn, and a total blast to play, every game I’ve played has been different, and some of went down the last few turns, to decide the win or loss.

Horrified can be purchased at Target.  and Amazon.
