Best known as the mother of dragons Daenerys Targaryen in all eight seasons of HBO’s mega-hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke is currently in final negotiations to join Marvel Studio’s upcoming new series on Disney+, Secret Invasion.
Her official role is still not known, but there are strong speculations that she could either be Queen Veranke, the Skrull Empress or Lyja, a Skrull with the ability to shape-shift into any human or animal form.
Clarke will be joined by previously announced Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn who both will be reprising their role in the MCU as Nick Fury and Skrull Talos, respectively. Alongside them are Olivia Colman and Kingsley Ben-Adir, who the latter will play as the yet-to-be-named antagonist in the series.
In the pages of Marvel Comics, Secret Invasion was a massive crossover event that tracked the slow invasion of the shapeshifting Skrulls onto Earth, with many of them posing as Avengers for years and planting the seeds for epic betrayals and shocking reveals. This show will be executed on a significantly smaller scale than that comic, which included top-tier characters like the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Deadpool, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and more.
“It very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took, So, that’s certainly our focus more than, Can we cram in more characters than Endgame?’ ” producer Kevin Feige
Secret Invasion was announced as a development property last year as one of Marvel’s many planned titles for Disney+. The series is said to follow a group of shape-shifting aliens called the Skrulls, who is set on infiltrating Earth for years. This group was last seen in the cinematic form in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, in Captain Marvel as well as the series finale of WandaVision.
However, as the series is still in progress as of the moment, no official date of release has been announced.
