Night of the Dead Early Access Review

Welcome to Night of the Dead, the survival horror game released in Early Access on Steam, The game created by Jacktostudios is a zombie-themed, crafting-heavy horror survival game with a bit of tower defense thrown in for good measure.

Every 24 hours, a horde of zombies descends on your location, you will need to build a base fast, guarded by a host of cunning and brutal traps. Be aware that the waves get harder each night, with more, tougher zombies. The zombies are drawn to your location, you don’t ever want to take them head-on (Think what you do a lot in 7 Days To Die) as this is almost certain death. You want to create a great base with traps.

The game shines with the “Tower Defense” part of the game designing a sequence of traps and watching them cutting, slicing, punching, setting zombies on fire is very satisfying.

The Story Of The Game

Night of the Dead stars a young woman named Lucy. She was part of a human experiment and became trapped in a city on an island that was taken over by zombies. She has to find and work with other survivors during the day, but also prepare. Lucky has to build and upgrade her base to survive the nightly zombie hordes.

The game takes place only in the third person view, which I was fine with as that is how I play most games when I get the chance to.  Lucy also has to survive by attending to basic needs such as hunting and farming, plus learning how to cook and making sure to keep hunger levels down. Lucy also has the option to scavenge through abandoned houses for items, weapons, and additional outfits.

As the game progresses, players will learn more about what happened on the island through journals. These journals provide clues on how Lucy can escape the island.

A different type of Zombie Survival Game

Something you have to keep in mind is that when you chop down trees, pick at rocks, etc., that resources don’t respawn. This will force you to always stay on the move often you will find yourself in the heart of the city, where zombies and rare loot both wait in greater numbers and is much more dangerous.

Instead of a leveling system, Night of the Dead features a study tree that you had to gather Research Material to spend to open tiers that would advance to learning more items or skills as you went. You are free to choose how you want to spend your points and build out this.

Final Thoughts

This is a different, fun take on the zombie survival game. It’s in early access, but it’s being updated and the devs, which by the way there are just 2 of them, are open to your suggestion. If you want a very hard, difficult take on the zombie horde building dying game, then look no further, but keep in mind this is still very much in early access, so there will be bumps in your road.

You can purchase the game on the steam page
