Top 8 Most Anticipated Games Gen Con 2022

Welcome to the End of July! As of this posting, we have a short 10 days to Gen Con 2022! This is the 55th anniversary.

Our coverage of Gen Con is shaping up well. I have over 8 interviews scheduled with game companies, plus I plan to stop by many other booths and do interviews, so it’s going to be a busy time!

This year, we have no sponsor for Gen Con! So if you want to help, email me, and we will talk! 🙂

Here is my list of the top 8 games I’m looking forward to most checking out at Gen Con 2022.

Note that some of these games will be released for sale, at Gen Con, but some will just be available to see/demo in the company’s booth.

#8  HeroQuest: The Frozen Horror  Hasbro

The frozen horror has burst forth from the icy tomb where it rested these last centuries, recovering its strength and awaiting Zargon’s summons. At last, that call has come, and the raging beast has returned to its ancient seat of power deep within the ice mountain. As we speak, it is rallying its minions and mobilizing its plans to cover the Northlands and the Realm in a shroud of deadly ice. Barbarian, you must call on courage and skill you did not realize you had to confront the evil of the frozen horror!

In HeroQuest: The Frozen Horror, an expansion for the HeroQuest Game System, you must journey through the bleak and frigid Northlands to destroy the evil frozen horror, a ferocious creature long banished. As the powerful barbarian, you are first challenged to survive dangerous solo quests to prove your strength and valor. Only then will your fellow heroes join you to gain access to the ice mountain to destroy the Scepter of Glacial Majesty and defeat the terrible monster.

One of the expansions I never got to play for the OG version as my cousin never had it (and I don’t have it now for my OG Copy), But I do have this one on Pre Order.

#7 Funkoverse Strategy Game: Universal Monsters 100

Face off in the ultimate Pop! battle! Combine your favorite characters and go head-to-head in four exciting game scenarios. Move through memorable locations — Dracula’s Castle or Frankenstein’s Laboratory — and use your characters’ unique abilities to capture points and achieve victory!

They had me about Dracula

#6 Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar

Welcome to Isla Nublar, where you and other scientists, dreamers, and schemers will build an attraction like no other. Take on the role of visionaries John Hammond and Simon Masrani, visiting scientists Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler and Dr. Ian Malcolm, sharp-minded park personnel Claire Dearing and Dr. Henry Wu, and many more, each playing a vital part in the island’s legacy.

Together, you will transform Isla Nublar into an astonishing paradise where awe-struck visitors encounter creatures never before seen by human eyes. Decide where to build park facilities, dinosaur enclosures, and guest attractions — and keep employees and visitors safe from the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex, colossal Brachiosaurus, clever Velociraptor, and other threats.

In Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar, you play through twelve adventures in which you customize an entirely unique game board and breed new dinosaurs you cannot unmake. Your team’s fateful choices will have a lasting impact, creating your own Isla Nublar story. Your experience will culminate in an endlessly replayable game of your own creation.

I backed the Kickstarter, so can’t wait to get my first look at what the game will look like, and what my friends and I will be experiencing when it delivers.

#5 Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances

Become the next Master Summoner in the battle arena game Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances, an expandable tabletop game inspired by the popular mobile game Disney Sorcerer’s Arena.

Recruit from a battle-ready roster of Disney and Pixar heroes and villains — Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey, Gaston, Aladdin, Demona, Sulley, Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, and Ariel — then combine the cards for your characters into a single deck. You take turns playing standard actions and cards from your hand to move your characters and attack opponents. If you knock out rival characters or occupy certain spaces near the center of the arena until your next turn, you score points. When a player reaches 20 points or runs out of cards in their deck, the game ends at the conclusion of that round, and whoever has the most points wins.

The rules for Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances Core Set are spread out across four chapters, with each chapter building on what’s come before to introduce players to new skills, upgrades, and abilities over multiple games. Multiple expansions will be released for the game line to allow for more team combinations.

This one sounds super fun to play, I’m a sucker for battle games, and throw in some cool Disney IP and it’s sounds like a winner, Looking foward to talking with OP about this one!

#4 Marvel Dice Throne

In Marvel Dice Throne , you become one of eight of Marvel’s most famous heroes, including Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Loki, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Miles Morales Spider-man! Every Marvel Dice Throne hero was painstakingly designed and balanced to provide the most thematic experience possible, allowing you to truly embody your favorite heroes like no other game. Featuring all-new mechanisms and asymmetrical designs, these are our most innovative and exciting heroes yet.

Marvel Dice Throne is a heart-pumping, fast-playing game of skilled card play and dice manipulation supporting multiple modes of play, including 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 2v2v2, or free-for-all.

Attack your opponents and activate abilities by rolling your hero’s unique set of five dice. Accumulate combat points and spend them on cards that have a large range of effects, such as granting permanent hero upgrades, applying status effects, and manipulating dice directly (yours, your teammate’s, or even your opponent’s).

Another one (I think I have a problem) that I backed on Kickstarter, it’s sitting on the shelf in the game room, sadly I have not had a chance to open it with the move, but can’t wait to play it at Gen Con, then battle it out at home as well!

#3 G.I. JOE Roleplaying Game

In the G.I. JOE Roleplaying game, create your own Joe by choosing your military training origin, personal traits, and role within the G.I. JOE organization to become a Real American Hero and save the day!

This book contains everything you need to create your own G.I. JOE character and play the game – just add dice, some friends, and your imagination.

Listeners of the Podcast, and readers of the site, know of my love for all things G.I. Joe, Cant wait to sit at the table with my friends and gen con and play this one! then run it for them at home!

#2  Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught

Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught is a competitive skirmish game in which each player controls an adventuring party from one of the powerful factions of the Forgotten Realms. Parties delve into dungeons, battle rival adventurers, and confront fearsome monsters on a quest for treasure and glory.

In more detail, Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught is a scenario-based combat game in which you collect treasure, level up, and bring powerful abilities to bear using dice rolls, upgrade cards, and the new combat dial card system to keep track of the action.

The core set of Onslaught includes material for two players, including twelve characters from two factions (Harpers and Zhentarim) and a horde of monsters — 21 pre-painted figures in all.

This was almost #1 for me, for many reasons. I can’t wait to see this one, what is not to love about it this one, D&D Minis, and Skirmish games.. Yes please, Sign me up!

#1 G.I. JOE Mission Critical

Join the team and battle Cobra in G.I. JOE Mission Critical, a co-operative miniatures board game. Stop Cobra in locations around the world, and try to defeat Cobra Commander himself to save the day!

G.I. JOE Mission Critical uses the Guardian System, providing a tense, challenging, and co-operative gaming experience.

I’ve waxed ecstatic about this one on the podcast, so nothing more needs to be said, This was #1 on my event wish list and thankfully got a ticket, so I’ll be sitting down and battling Cobra Saturday of Gen Con, then doing the same at home, as stop me if you have heard this one before, I backed this on Kickstarter like you did not know already know that, and knowing is half the battle.
