Mythic Games, once a shining star in the board game crowdfunding universe, has met a tragic end. The company, known for ambitious projects and passionate backers, has officially dissolved amidst a series of financial setbacks, controversies, and broken promises.
The news of Mythic Games’ demise was announced on October 10th by French publication Le Parisien. The company’s Managing Director, Pascal Léonidas Vesperini, has been appointed as the liquidator to oversee the closure process.
Founded in 2015, Mythic Games quickly established itself as a leader in crowdfunding board games. However, its meteoric rise was followed by a series of missteps that ultimately led to its downfall. Production delays, miscommunication, and financial mismanagement plagued the company, eroding the trust of its loyal fanbase.
One of the most significant controversies surrounding Mythic Games involved its unfulfilled Kickstarter promises. Projects like HEL: The Last Saga and Anastyr were left incomplete, forcing the company to sell the intellectual property rights to CMON. Backers were offered redesigned core boxes, a far cry from the original pledges they had made, sparking widespread outrage.
The fate of the very ambitious Monsterpocalypse is unknown. I’ve reached out to Privateer Press for comment but have not heard back as of this writing.
The dissolution of Mythic Games highlights the challenges faced by crowdfunding companies, especially those attempting to balance ambitious projects with financial sustainability. The company’s inability to manage its resources effectively, combined with a series of missteps, ultimately proved to be its undoing.
While Mythic Games may be gone, the lessons learned from its downfall can serve as a cautionary tale for other crowdfunding companies. The importance of transparent communication, realistic project timelines, and responsible financial management cannot be overstated. As the board game industry continues to evolve, it is essential that companies prioritize the satisfaction of their backers and avoid the pitfalls that led to Mythic Games’ demise.
