Dark Horse Unleashes “The Fallbacks”: A New D&D Comic Series

Get ready to roll for initiative and laugh out loud, because Dark Horse Comics is set to debut a brand new Dungeons & Dragons comic series this October: Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks. This four-issue miniseries promises to bring a fresh, humorous take on classic D&D adventures, starring a beloved, albeit unconventional, party of heroes.

For fans of the Forgotten Realms and those who enjoy a healthy dose of chaos with their questing, The Fallbacks is poised to be an exciting addition to the D&D comic universe.

Meet the Misfit Crew: The Fallbacks

The series introduces readers to “The Fallbacks,” a ragtag group of adventurers who first charmed audiences in Jaleigh Johnson’s novel, The Fallbacks: Bound for Ruin. Now, these memorable characters are making their comic book debut, ready to stumble, bicker, and ultimately triumph in their own unique way.

The adventuring party consists of:

  • Tess: The sly rogue elf
  • Anson: The loyal human fighter
  • Cazrin: The inquisitive human wizard
  • Lark: The bombastic tiefling bard
  • Baldric: The devil-may-care dwarf cleric
  • Uggie: Their ever-hungry otyugh companion

This quirky ensemble is sure to resonate with anyone who’s ever been part of a D&D campaign with friends who are more “fun” than “functional.”

A Creative Team Ready to Roll

Bringing this dynamic group to life are some fantastic creators:

  • Writer: Greg Pak (Planet Hulk, Stranger Things)
  • Penciler: Wilton Santos (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra)
  • Inker: Edvan Alves
  • Colorist: Raul Angulo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)
  • Letterer: Nate Piekos (Minor Threats)

Greg Pak expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that reading Jaleigh Johnson’s novel felt exactly like playing a D&D campaign with his “funniest, most subversive, and biggest-hearted friends.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the vibe fans can expect from the comic.

What’s the Story?

The Fallbacks finds our daring, dubious, and dysfunctional adventurers arriving in the city of Loudwater. Their goal? The classic pursuit of gold and glory. However, their plans quickly go awry when a run-in with some kobold thieves puts them in direct conflict with a rival team of “deeply annoying local heroes.” The series will explore whether The Fallbacks can pull off a legendary heist or if they’ll sacrifice it all just to put these so-called “heroes” in their place. Expect plenty of comedic mishaps, character-driven moments, and heroic mayhem.

Release Details and Collectible Covers

The first issue of the four-part miniseries, Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks #1, is set to arrive in comic shops on October 15, 2025. Each issue will feature a variety of stunning covers by artists like Marguerite Sauvage, Uzuri, Stephen Segovia, and Dan Panosian.

In a special treat for collectors, all four issues will also include back cover art by Julie Dillon. When collected, these back covers will connect to form a single, stunning image that pays homage to the legendary illustrator J.C. Leyendecker.

The Fallbacks marks Dark Horse Comics’ first solo D&D comic under their new licensing agreement with Wizards of the Coast, promising a new era of D&D storytelling in the comic world. So, mark your calendars and prepare for an adventure that’s as full of heart and humor as it is high fantasy!
