The Commodore 64 Ultimate: A Modern Revival of a Retro Icon

Get ready, retro computing enthusiasts! The highly anticipated Commodore 64 Ultimate is on the horizon, promising a faithful recreation of the beloved 8-bit machine with modern enhancements. This isn’t just an emulator in a C64-shaped shell; it’s a new hardware release that aims to be over 99% compatible with original C64 games, cartridges, and peripherals. Pre-orders have already begun, starting at $299, with shipping expected to commence in October.

What is the Commodore 64 Ultimate?

The Commodore 64 Ultimate is essentially a complete C64 motherboard replacement built around an AMD Artix 7 FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). This means it leverages hardware emulation rather than software, providing an authentic and virtually lag-free experience. Developed by Gideon Zweijtzer, this project evolved from the popular 1541 Ultimate cartridge, which offered a cycle-exact emulation of the Commodore 1541 floppy disk drive. The Ultimate-64 expands on this by integrating a full C64 system.

Key Features to Look Forward To:

This modern C64 offers a compelling blend of nostalgia and contemporary convenience:

  • Authentic Experience: With FPGA-based hardware, it promises near-perfect compatibility with original C64 software and hardware, including cartridges, datasettes, and disk drives.
  • Modern Connectivity: Say goodbye to blurry composite video! The C64 Ultimate boasts HDMI output, supporting 1080p at 50Hz (PAL) or 60Hz (NTSC) with virtually zero-lag. It also includes USB-A 2.0 and USB-C ports, 100Mbps Ethernet, and Wi-Fi for easy file transfer and network capabilities.
  • Enhanced Audio: Featuring two SID sockets for genuine 6581/8580 SID chips (with auto voltage and filter detection) and an UltiSID octal-core FPGA SID emulation, the audio experience is designed to be top-notch. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack with optical S/PDIF support.
  • Integrated Storage and Emulation: The system integrates Ultimate-II+ functionality, offering 1541 floppy disk emulation and support for various file formats like .D64, .T64, .PRG, and more, loaded from USB thumb drives. It also includes tape emulation and a DMA loader for faster loading.
  • Mechanical Keyboard: The C64 Ultimate comes with a 66-key mechanical keyboard featuring Gateron Pro 3.0 55g switches, maintaining the original C64 layout and shapes, complete with NKRO (N-Key Rollover) and 70 RGB LEDs.
  • Thoughtful Design: The new L-shaped motherboard has been replaced with a standard shape for easier mounting in breadbin or C64C style cases. It also features a classic rocker switch for power, reset, and menu access.

Where to Get Your Hands on One:

Pre-orders for the Commodore 64 Ultimate are currently open, starting at $299.  Keep in mind that shipping is anticipated for October or November.

The Commodore 64 Ultimate is poised to be a significant release for retro enthusiasts, offering a compelling blend of authentic C64 computing with modern conveniences.

New Commodore Owners:

This new product comes on the news that, Christian Simpson, widely known by his YouTube persona “Perifractic,” announced that he and his team have acquired the rights to the iconic Commodore name and related assets. This “low seven-figure” deal, though still finalizing funding, marks a significant moment, as a passionate figure from the retro community steps up to become the acting CEO of Commodore Corporation.

For years, the Commodore brand has been a fragmented entity, with various companies licensing its name for a range of products, often with mixed results. Now, with Perifractic at the helm, there’s a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision: “Honoring our past, innovating the future.”
