A New Darkness Rises: ‘DIABLO: THE ROLEPLAYING GAME’ Announced
For over 25 years, the world of Sanctuary has been a place of brutal combat, dark fantasy, and relentless demon-slaying. From the original game’s humble beginnings to the expansive world of Diablo IV, millions of players have ventured into the depths of hell and emerged with legendary loot. Now, for the first time, fans will be able to tell their own stories in this grim universe with the official announcement of DIABLO: THE ROLEPLAYING GAME.
This isn’t a board game with RPG elements; it’s a full-fledged tabletop RPG designed to capture the essence of the beloved video game series. The game is the result of a multi-year partnership between Blizzard Entertainment and two innovative tabletop creators, Glass Cannon Unplugged and Genuine Entertainment.
Forged in Fandom and Hellfire
The creative team behind this project is a dream team of industry veterans. Led by Joe LeFavi, the game’s core rules are being developed by a roster of renowned designers including Cam Banks (Marvel Heroic Roleplaying), John Harper (Blades in the Dark), and Shawn Tomkin (Ironsworn). This expertise ensures that the game will be both a faithful adaptation of the Diablo universe and a compelling tabletop experience in its own right.
A New System for a Grimdark World
Instead of using an existing system like D&D 5th Edition, the team has created a brand new, custom d6 dice pool system. This system is specifically designed to replicate the fast-paced, visceral combat and power fantasy that defines the Diablo series. The game promises “no inexperienced and squishy 1st level characters.” Players will start as seasoned heroes from the very beginning, ready to delve into dungeons and unleash devastating abilities and combos.
The game is thematically set alongside the events of Diablo IV, but with future supplements planned to explore the entire timeline of the series. Players will have the chance to create characters from the core classes of the video game—Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer—and experience the relentless, hack-and-slash action that fans know and love.
What to Expect
The core rulebook will be a massive tome of over 300 pages, filled with original game rules, rich lore, and breathtaking art. In a nod to the game’s cooperative spirit, it will be a direct companion to the upcoming Diablo: The Board Game, with interchangeable components and a fully integrated product line.
A Kickstarter campaign is slated for Q4 2025, with the full game expected to be released in the summer of 2026. This gives fans plenty of time to get ready to face the hordes of Hell and tell their own legends in the dark, desperate world of Sanctuary.
