Forgotten Realms and Eberron Return: Two D&D Classics Hit Steam in August

Prepare your party and sharpen your blades, because two more classic Dungeons & Dragons video games are making a grand return. Following the successful re-release of The Temple of Elemental Evil, publisher SNEG is continuing its mission to preserve and modernize beloved D&D titles. In August 2025, fans will be able to experience the unique adventures of Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard and Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone on Steam.

These two games, originally released in the mid-2000s, represent a fascinating period in D&D video game history, showcasing how developers experimented with different genres beyond the traditional CRPG. Now, with a series of quality-of-life improvements, they’re ready for a new generation of players and a nostalgic trip for old-school fans.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard (2005)

Set in the magical-meets-steampunk world of Eberron, Dragonshard is a unique real-time strategy (RTS) game with a heavy dose of RPG flavor. Developed by Liquid Entertainment, the game’s core innovation was its “dual-layer” gameplay.

  • RTS on the Surface: On the overworld, players command armies and build bases in a traditional RTS format, battling for control of powerful artifacts.
  • RPG in the Underdark: Below ground, a small party of heroes from your army can delve into dungeons, where the gameplay shifts to a more direct, RPG-style dungeon crawl. Experience and loot gained in the dungeons directly benefit the units on the surface, creating a dynamic feedback loop.

This re-release on Steam brings the game up to modern standards with support for higher resolutions, smoother gameplay, and other under-the-hood fixes for a cleaner experience on today’s PCs. It’s an excellent opportunity to explore the unique world of Eberron in a way no other game has.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (2004)

If you prefer action over strategy, then Demon Stone is the game for you. This cinematic action-RPG, developed by Stormfront Studios, puts players in control of a trio of heroes in the famed Forgotten Realms setting: Rannek the fighter, Illius the sorcerer, and Zhai the rogue.

The game is a fast-paced, party-based brawler that emphasizes fluid, combo-driven combat. What made Demon Stone so memorable was its incredible production value for its time. The story was penned by none other than New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, and the game features stellar voice acting from a star-studded cast including Sir Patrick Stewart and Michael Clarke Duncan.

The Steam re-release includes key enhancements for modern systems, such as full controller support, widescreen scaling, and optimized shadows and audio. It’s the perfect way to experience a classic D&D adventure that feels more like an interactive fantasy movie.

The return of both Dragonshard and Demon Stone highlights the rich history of D&D video games and provides a fantastic chance to revisit two very different but equally memorable adventures. Be sure to add them to your Steam wishlist and get ready for a nostalgic trip back to the 2000s!
