Ahoy, Matey! Setting Sail with the Upcoming Survival Game, ‘Crosswind’
The Age of Piracy is coming alive in a new and exciting way with the upcoming survival game, Crosswind. Developed and published by the dedicated team at Crosswind Crew, this title promises a unique blend of swashbuckling adventure, classic survival mechanics, and intense soulslike combat. While originally announced as a free-to-play MMO, the developers have pivoted to a paid, co-op survival experience based on player feedback from their closed alpha, a move that has been met with a lot of positive reception from the community.
A Pirate’s Life: Survival and Exploration
In Crosswind, players will be dropped into a procedurally generated open world in the Age of Piracy. The core of the game is built around familiar survival elements: exploring the world, gathering resources, and building and crafting to survive. But this isn’t just about punching trees and building a small shack. Players will be able to construct substantial bases and outposts, with a building system that allows for creative designs and complex production chains. You’ll even be able to recruit NPC workers to help with tasks like gathering and crafting, freeing you up for more daring adventures.
Land and Sea Combat: A Swashbuckling Blend
Crosswind aims to create a truly seamless experience between naval and land-based gameplay. You’ll command your own ship, engaging in exhilarating cannon-blazing sea battles with other vessels and even bombarding coastal fortifications. When it’s time to go ashore, the game transitions smoothly into close-quarters, melee-based combat. The combat system draws inspiration from soulslike games, emphasizing skill-based engagement with a focus on parrying, dodging, and a variety of melee weapons and firearms.
The game will feature challenging bosses and mini-bosses, both on land and at sea, offering a real test of your skills and preparation. The developers have stated that while the combat is inspired by Dark Souls, they are also working to make it accessible to a wider audience.
The Journey Ahead: What to Expect
Crosswind is currently set to launch into Steam Early Access sometime in 2026. While the full release is still a ways off, the developers have a clear vision and are actively engaging with their player base. A recent trailer introduced a new biome called the “Ashlands,” a dangerous, undead-infested area, as well as a Tortuga outpost under siege. The developers have also teased features like ship customization, crew recruitment, and a variety of vessel types.
The decision to move away from a free-to-play MMO to a traditional paid co-op survival game is a promising one. It shows that the team at Crosswind Crew is prioritizing a highly polished, content-rich experience for their players. You’ll be able to play solo or with friends in a PvE-focused world, and while some PvP elements may exist in specific zones, the core experience is about surviving and thriving together.
With its beautiful pirate fantasy setting, deep survival mechanics, and engaging combat, Crosswind is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the survival genre. We’ll be keeping a weather eye on the horizon for more news as it sails toward its Early Access launch.
