Old School RPG, ‘Secret of Weepstone’ Coming To Steam

In a world full of high-fidelity, photorealistic games, an upcoming title is ready to take us on a nostalgic trip back to the golden age of tabletop role-playing games. “The Secret of Weepstone,” a new RPG from developer Talesworth Game Studio and publisher DreadXP, has been announced, and it’s already turning heads with its unique aesthetic and old-school charm.

A Hand-Drawn, Black-and-White World

The most striking feature of “The Secret of Weepstone” is its visual style. The game is entirely hand-drawn in a black-and-white, line-art style that is a direct homage to the illustrations found in classic Dungeons & Dragons modules from the ’70s and ’80s. This isn’t just a filter or a stylistic choice; it’s a deliberate and beautiful love letter to the era of pen-and-paper RPGs, giving the game a distinct and atmospheric feel that sets it apart from anything else on the market.

A Tale of Common Folk, Not Heroes

The story of “The Secret of Weepstone” is just as compelling as its art style. The game is set in the once-thriving village of Weepstone, now withering in the shadow of a crumbling keep. Lord Byron, the village’s ruler, is plagued by terrible nightmares of unholy rituals, and the land itself is dying. With no heroes to call upon, it falls to the common people of the town—from simple villagers to battle-worn adventurers—to venture into the keep and uncover the source of the evil. This narrative focus on ordinary people facing extraordinary odds adds a layer of vulnerability and grit that is often missing from modern fantasy RPGs.

Gameplay: Dice, Death, and Dungeon-Crawling

“The Secret of Weepstone” promises a classic dungeon-crawling experience inspired by its tabletop roots. Players will assemble a party of up to eight members and delve into a dangerous keep filled with puzzles, traps, secrets, and a menagerie of classic fantasy foes. The core gameplay revolves around dice rolls, which will determine the outcome of combat and skill checks.

A particularly intriguing feature is the “Mortal Favors” system. The game emphasizes that death is an inevitable part of the journey, and when a character perishes, the surviving party members gain a unique “Mortal Favor” to help them continue their quest. This system embraces the brutal difficulty of old-school RPGs and makes every death a meaningful part of the story. You won’t just lose; you’ll gain something from it, making your party’s struggle all the more impactful.

What’s Next?

“The Secret of Weepstone” is scheduled to launch in 2026 for PC (Steam), but you won’t have to wait that long to get a taste of the action. A playable demo will be available at PAX West 2025, which runs from August 29 to September 1. For those of us who can’t make it to the show, the announcement trailer is a must-watch and a great way to get a feel for the game’s unique aesthetic.

“The Secret of Weepstone” is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of classic RPGs, dark fantasy, and unique art styles. Its commitment to a genuine old-school experience, from its hand-drawn visuals to its dice-based mechanics, makes it one of the most exciting indie titles on the horizon. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one and can’t wait to see what secrets Weepstone has in store.
