Blood Bowl Third Season Edition is Coming

Good news, sports fans! The pitch is about to get a whole lot bloodier. Games Workshop has officially announced a new edition for the beloved fantasy football game, Warhammer: Blood Bowl. This new core box, dubbed the Third Season Edition, promises to be the “definitive edition of the game,” with a launch set for later this year.

This is a major shake-up for the tabletop game, bringing with it not just two new teams in a brand new box set, but also significant rule changes that will impact every team in the game. Let’s break down what’s been announced and what this means for the future of the game.

New Teams: Bretonnians vs. Tomb Kings

The new core box is a clash of old-world rivals with a modern twist. The box will feature two brand new plastic teams: the Brionne Barons of Bretonnia and the Nehekhara Nightmares, a returning Tomb Kings team.

  • The Brionne Barons (Bretonnian Team): This is an entirely new team for the tabletop game, though a version has been seen in video games. The Bretonnian team is a high-risk, high-reward “knight” team, with powerful, heavily-armored Grail Knights leading the charge. Supported by Knight Throwers and Knight Catchers, and a slew of scrappy Squires, this team offers a fast-paced and aggressive playstyle. Their Grail Knights even get a new skill, “Steady Footing,” which gives them a chance to avoid being knocked down.
  • The Nehekhara Nightmares (Tomb Kings Team): The fan-favorite Tomb Kings are back from the dead! These are not just resculpts; they are all-new plastic miniatures that are looking sharper than ever. As a notoriously slow but incredibly tough team, they are led by the powerful and brutal Tomb Guardians. While they have a reputation for being poor ball handlers, a new rule might make them a little more reliable.

Rules Updates: A Smoother, More Strategic Game

Games Workshop has stated that the core of the game remains the same, but the rules have been “exhaustively rewritten for clarity.” This is great news for both new and veteran players, as it promises a more streamlined experience with consistent terminology. Some of the most significant changes include:

  • A New Action: Secure the Ball: This is a huge change, particularly for bash-heavy teams like the Tomb Kings. This new action allows a player to pick up the ball on a 2+ roll, regardless of their agility. The catch? It ends your turn immediately, and can only be used if there are no opponents within two squares. This offers a reliable way for clumsy players to get the ball and adds a new layer of tactical decision-making.
  • Revised Kick-Off Table and Skills: The kick-off table has been revised, and a number of skills have been updated or removed. For example, the “Wildly Inaccurate” pass rule is gone, which might encourage more daring throws.
  • Status Markers: The new box will include smart status markers to help players keep track of their players’ conditions (Prone, Stunned, etc.) without having to awkwardly lay miniatures down. It’s a simple change, but a huge quality-of-life improvement.
  • All Team Rosters Reworked: The new hardback rulebook will include reworked rosters for every team in the game, meaning the meta is about to be shaken up completely. Every team will be affected, keeping even the “hoariest veterans on their toes.”

What This Means for the Community

The announcement of the Third Season Edition is a testament to the continued success and evolution of Blood Bowl. The inclusion of new plastic miniatures for the Bretonnians and Tomb Kings, along with the updated ruleset, shows that Games Workshop is committed to keeping the game fresh and exciting.

While no precise release date has been given, the box is expected to hit shelves later in 2025. Get ready to roll some dice and start planning your new roster, because the next season of mayhem is just around the corner!
