Critical Role Releases Official Trailer for Campaign 4
Critical Role has officially released the trailer for its highly anticipated fourth campaign, heralding a major new chapter for the popular Dungeons & Dragons show. The premiere is set for Thursday, October 2nd, and with it comes a number of significant changes that promise to shake up the very format of the show.
This new campaign moves away from the familiar world of Exandria, which has served as the setting for the first three campaigns and related animated series. Instead, the story will unfold in a brand-new world called Aramán, a land still grappling with the aftermath of a rebellion that saw its gods overthrown.
Perhaps the most dramatic shift is in the Game Master role. For the first time in a core Critical Role campaign, Matthew Mercer will step away from the DM screen and join the players at the table. The new Game Master is none other than Brennan Lee Mulligan of Dimension 20 fame. This, along with the return of the full main cast and the addition of several new players, marks a true reinvention of the show.
The new campaign will adopt a “West Marches-style” approach, meaning the large cast of 13 players will be divided into three rotating tables: the “Soldiers,” “Seekers,” and “Schemers.” Each group will focus on a different aspect of the world, from combat and exploration to political intrigue and lore. The trailer hints at the central plot, which revolves around the pending execution of a figure named Thjazi Fang. The disparate characters, each with a connection to Fang, will unite to uncover the truth behind his fate.
The premiere will be available to stream live on Critical Role’s Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as on their new platform, Beacon.tv, on October 2nd. VODs will be available on Beacon immediately after the live broadcast, and on YouTube the following Monday.
With a new GM, a new world, a massive cast, and a fresh format, Campaign 4 is poised to be a landmark moment for Critical Role and the broader tabletop gaming community.
Would you like a list of the confirmed players and their characters in the new campaign, or perhaps some speculation on what the “Soldiers,” “Seekers,” and “Schemers” groups might entail?
