Dragonlance: Something Is Coming? But What It Is? Rumors Swirl as Weis, Hickman, and Manganiello Reunite at WotC

The world of Krynn might be about to get a whole lot brighter for fans of Dragonlance. Speculation has reached a fever pitch following a series of highly cryptic social media posts featuring the fantasy setting’s original creators, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, alongside actor and notable D&D enthusiast Joe Manganiello, at the headquarters of Wizards of the Coast (WotC).

While nothing official has been announced by WotC, Weis, Hickman, or Manganiello, the images are fueling intense excitement about a new, major project for the classic setting.

The Cryptic Reunion

The buzz began when Manganiello and Tracy Hickman shared a photograph of themselves, along with Margaret Weis, standing in front of a massive dragon sculpture at the Wizards of the Coast offices in Renton, Washington.

The captions accompanying the posts were intentionally vague but powerfully suggestive:

  • Tracy Hickman posted the image with the words, “Something is coming…”
  • Joe Manganiello followed suit, using the enthusiastic declaration, “WE’RE BACK” along with several dragon emojis.
  • The official Dungeons & Dragons social media account even chimed in with a welcoming, “Welcome back to the table!”

A later photo, shared by Margaret Weis, showed the trio accompanied by Laura Hickman (co-creator of Ravenloft) and, significantly, Dan Ayoub, the recently appointed Head of the D&D Franchise at WotC. Ayoub’s involvement, coupled with the high-profile return of the setting’s original novelists, has fan imaginations running wild.

What is the Speculation Pointing Toward?

The appearance of these key figures together—especially Manganiello, who was photographed wearing a Dragonlance T-shirt—has led to two main theories:

1. Revival of the Live-Action TV Series

The most fervent speculation surrounds the potential revival of a live-action Dragonlance TV series.

Manganiello has long been one of the setting’s biggest advocates and was previously developing a Dragonlance show. However, the actor confirmed in early 2024 that the project was dead, stating that WotC was “not interested in developing further” at that time.

The presence of the original authors, coupled with the change in leadership at the D&D Franchise (Dan Ayoub), has given fans hope that this stalled adaptation has been brought back to life. With Manganiello’s passion and a script that was reportedly well-received by insiders, a TV series based on the epic Dragonlance Chronicles would be a dream come true for many.

2. New Tabletop RPG or Sourcebook Content

Another strong possibility is that the collaboration is focused on bringing a major new Dungeons & Dragons tabletop product to the world of Krynn.

While Weis and Hickman are beloved for their novels, their return to the D&D team could signal a renewed push for the campaign setting itself. The last 5th Edition book, Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen (2022), contained limited lore. With the release of the updated 2024 core rulebooks, a full-fledged Dragonlance sourcebook or a series of new adventures penned with the creators’ insight would be perfectly timed.

The Only Certainty: Excitement

It is important to reiterate that this is all based purely on social media hints and community speculation. There has been no official announcement regarding a TV show, new D&D book, video game, or any other media project involving the group.

What the reunion does confirm is that the relationship between the Dragonlance creators and Wizards of the Coast has mended significantly, signaling a new, collaborative era for the legendary setting. Whatever Weis, Hickman, and Manganiello are “cooking up,” the fact that the original “Band” is back together at “The Table” has undeniably energized the entire Dungeons & Dragons community.

Fans will be watching closely for an official announcement to see exactly how the fate of Krynn will unfold next.
