Tabletop Carnage: DOOM Arena Board Game Live On Kickstarter
The legendary FPS franchise, DOOM, is once again translating its hyper-violent action to the tabletop in a new competitive miniatures board game: DOOM Arena Board Game. Launched on Kickstarter by Modiphius Entertainment (publishers of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare), the campaign promises a fast-paced, asymmetrical skirmish experience faithful to the source material.
For fans of tactical miniatures games and the brutal universe of DOOM, here is an in-depth look at what the campaign offers, the core gameplay, and the unique dual-edition approach.
Core Gameplay: Heavy Metal Speed Chess
Described by its designers as “heavy metal speed chess,” DOOM Arena Board Game moves away from the cooperative dungeon crawl of previous iterations to focus on intense player-versus-player (PvP) arena combat.
- Asymmetrical Combat: The game is designed for 2–4 players, pitting a single player controlling the Doom Slayer (or classic Doom Guy) against up to three opponents who collectively command the Hordes of Hell.
- Tactical Movement: Combat takes place on a hex-based map, where movement and positioning are crucial. Each piece—from the Doom Slayer to the various demons—has unique movement capabilities and attack templates, requiring clever use of the environment.
- Escalating Rounds: The game is quick to learn but difficult to master, featuring a limited action economy where players must plan their moves and attacks meticulously. Gameplay escalates over three rounds, with players gaining “arsenal tokens” to unlock bigger, nastier weapons and spawn more powerful demons as the game progresses.
- Glory Kills and Devastation: The system is built to reward aggression. Damage dealt translates into “Blood points,” and the player with the most keycard tokens (won by having the most Blood points each round) at the end of the game is the winner.
Two Eras, One Rule Set: The Dual Editions
Perhaps the most unique aspect of this Kickstarter is the offering of two distinct base games under the same rule system, each dedicated to a different era of the DOOM saga.
| Edition | Theme & Aesthetic | Playable Character & Demons |
| **DOOM: Classic | Arena Board Game** | Based on the original DOOM (1993). Features a chunky, retro, pixelated aesthetic. |
| **DOOM: The Dark Ages | Arena Board Game** | Based on the upcoming title, DOOM: The Dark Ages. Features a grimdark, medieval-fantasy look. |
While the two editions share the core rules, they feature their own unique miniatures and visual components, allowing fans to fully immerse themselves in their favorite era of the franchise. Furthermore, the campaign is expected to include various expansions with enemies unique to both games.
Modiphius and the Campaign Status
The DOOM Arena Board Game Kickstarter campaign, from licensed publisher Modiphius Entertainment, launched on Tuesday, October 28th. As with many miniatures campaigns, backers can expect various pledge levels, which typically include:
- Standard Pledge: A copy of one of the core games (Classic or Dark Ages).
- All-In/Hell Pledge: A higher tier that often includes both core games, all unlocked Stretch Goals, and various expansion content.
The campaign offers the usual Kickstarter benefits, such as high-quality PVC miniatures that are detailed and ready for painting, as well as the opportunity to influence the final contents through Stretch Goals as funding targets are met.
This project is a must-see for gamers who appreciate competitive strategy paired with a visceral, action-heavy theme.
The campaign is live now and ends in 24 days (as of this post)
