First Blood Reborn: Para Bellum Announces Massive Overhaul for February 2026

If you’ve been treating First Blood as just the “lite” version of Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, it is time to rethink your strategy. Para Bellum Games has officially announced a completely revamped edition of their skirmish wargame, set to launch in February 2026.

This isn’t just a 2.5 update or a FAQ patch—it is a foundational rebuild designed to give First Blood its own distinct identity.

Here is everything we know about the new edition so far.

The Release Timeline

  • Announcement: December 2025 (Official “Intro to the New Edition”)

  • Launch Date: February 2026

  • Updates: Para Bellum has committed to weekly deep-dive articles leading up to the launch to explain the new mechanics.

The “True Skirmish” Evolution

For years, First Blood has lived in the shadow of its big brother, often feeling like a rank-and-flank game forced into a skirmish format. The 2026 edition aims to break those chains.

The developers have stated their goal is to create a “Scalable Skirmish” experience. This means the rules will handle small 10-model clashes just as fluidly as massive 50-model brawls, without bogging down.

1. Hybrid Activation System

The biggest shake-up is how you move your minis.

  • The Old Way: You activated a whole Regiment and moved them roughly together.

  • The New Way (2026): When you draw a Regiment’s Command Card, every Warrior in that Regiment activates individually. This allows for granular control—one spearman can run to an objective while his squadmate charges an enemy, rather than moving as a block.

2. Goodbye, Coherency

In a massive shift for tactical flexibility, Warriors are no longer tied to coherency after deployment. Once your troops are on the table, they are free to scatter. This turns the game into a chaotic, dynamic melee rather than a battle of “blocks,” allowing you to hunt down enemies or secure multiple objectives with a single unit split across the board.

3. Heroic Officers

Officers are getting a massive “Glow-Up.” They are no longer just upgrades attached to a unit; they now possess their own Command Cards. This means an Officer acts as an independent Hero on the battlefield, capable of their own heroic feats separate from the troops they brought with them.

4. Comparative Dice Mechanics

The new edition introduces a “comparative dice system.” Instead of just hitting a target number, you are now often comparing face values of your dice against your opponent’s. This adds a layer of tension where a great roll can still be parried by an even better roll, keeping both players engaged during every attack.

“The Sword is Mightier than the Pen”

Para Bellum has adopted a new design philosophy for this edition: Less Rulebook, More Playing. They have actively stripped down the rules bloat. The goal is to minimize the number of times you have to pause the game to check a specific interaction or keyword. The rules are being written to be intuitive, letting the tactical depth come from your decisions on the table, not your ability to memorize a codex.

What’s Next?

If you are currently playing Conquest, you don’t need to rebase your miniatures. Your current collection is safe. However, you will need to prepare for a totally different tactical mindset.
