Larian Studios Announces Divinity Video Game At Game Awards 2025

The moment RPG fans have been breathlessly awaiting has finally arrived! At The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer behind the 2023 phenomenon Baldur’s Gate 3, made a triumphant return to their own universe by officially announcing their next massive project: Divinity.

Dropping a cinematic trailer that was both darkly gorgeous and suitably unsettling, Larian confirmed they are taking everything they learned from their D&D masterpiece and pouring it into a new, incredibly ambitious entry in their original fantasy series.

The End of Original Sin—The Beginning of Divinity

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the announcement is the title itself. The new game is simply called Divinity, deliberately dropping the Original Sin subtitle that defined their last two major games in the series.

This signals a significant shift. While the new game is set in the beloved world of Rivellon—Larian’s home-grown fantasy universe—studio founder Swen Vincke stated that this is a fresh entry designed to be an experience with “more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before.”

Why the change?

  • A Clean Slate: The name suggests a soft reboot or a standalone experience, making it welcoming to the massive wave of players who only know Larian from Baldur’s Gate 3, without requiring them to play the older Original Sin games.

  • Consolidating Lore: As Vincke noted, this is their “first game entitled ‘Divinity,'” hinting at an attempt to bring the various elements, eras, and genres of the 20-year-old franchise (which has included action RPGs and RTS games) into one cohesive vision.

Bigger Than Baldur’s Gate 3

The biggest piece of hype came directly from the stage and subsequent press releases: Larian is claiming Divinity will be their “biggest game ever,” even “larger than Baldur’s Gate 3.”

Given the scale, detail, and sheer number of reactive systems present in their previous work, this claim sets an astronomical expectation. Fans can likely expect:

  • Expanded Scope and Scale: A world that offers even more paths, choices, and consequences.

  • The Signature Interplay: A return to the physics-based, elemental interaction system that defined the Original Sin games (e.g., electrifying a pool of water, freezing rain).

  • Deep Narrative Focus: Highly detailed Origin Characters and interwoven personal stories, building on the success of character writing perfected in Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3.

What We Know (And What We Don’t)

The reveal was a proof-of-concept, solving the mystery of the cryptic statue that had been teased for weeks (which turned out to be the “Hellstone” structure from the trailer). Specifics on gameplay and a release window are still scarce.

Detail Status Notes
Official Title Divinity Not Divinity: Original Sin 3
Genre CRPG (Likely) Widely expected to be a turn-based, isometric CRPG, following their success.
Setting Rivellon The familiar fantasy world from the Divinity series.
Release Date TBD No release window or platform list was given; Larian takes its time.

The unsettling cinematic trailer showcased a gruesome ritual, the burning of a figure inside a wicker effigy (the Hellstone), and the birth of a grotesque, dark entity, suggesting that the new entry may explore a darker, more mythic, and terrifying side of Rivellon.

Larian has proven they are the masters of the modern RPG. By returning to their original IP with the resources, talent, and renewed ambition gained from their last blockbuster, the stage is set for a truly groundbreaking experience.
