Something Wicked This Way Comes: Horrified: D&D is Heading to Ravenloft!
Dungeons & Dragons fans, grab your gear and check your saving throws—Ravensburger is about to get spooky. A brand-new expansion for Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons has been teased, and it’s officially taking us to the mists of Ravenloft.
Last week, Ravensburger dropped a cryptic teaser image featuring the Carrionette—that soul-swapping, needle-wielding doll from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. While we don’t have an official title yet, we do have a release window: Fall 2026. Just in time for Halloween, of course.
What is Horrified: D&D?
If you haven’t played the base game yet, it’s a cooperative survival experience where players step into classic D&D classes (like the Fighter or Rogue) to hunt down legendary threats.
The game stands out in the Horrified franchise by blending traditional board game mechanics with D&D flair:
-
Unique Boss Fights: Every monster—from the Beholder to the Mimic—has a specific puzzle or condition you must solve to defeat it.
-
The D20 Factor: Unlike its predecessors, this version incorporates the iconic 20-sided die to determine the success of certain actions.
-
Teamwork is Survival: You aren’t just fighting; you’re rescuing villagers and collecting specific items needed to banish the darkness.
The Return of the Vampire King?
While the Carrionette is the only confirmed newcomer, the community is already buzzing about who else might be lurking in the expansion.
The top contender? Strahd von Zarovich. Adding Strahd would be a poetic “full circle” moment for the franchise. The very first Horrified game featured the Universal Monsters’ Dracula. Bringing in D&D’s most famous vampire would be the perfect homage to the series’ roots while expanding the lore of the tabletop world.
Are you ready to face the mists of Ravenloft, or will your soul end up trapped in a wooden doll?
