Gary Con XVIII D&D News – A Gygax Returns To D&D

Gary Con XVIII kicked off in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. While the convention is always a heartfelt tribute to the late Gary Gygax, this year’s event delivered some shocking  news: Luke Gygax is officially returning to the D&D fold.

In a surprise press briefing on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Luke Gygax took the stage alongside Dan Ayoub, Wizards of the Coast’s VP of Digital Product and D&D Franchise. The duo announced a landmark collaboration aimed at, in Ayoub’s words, “mending the rift between family and franchise.”

Melf Returns to Greyhawk

The centerpiece of the announcement is a new official book titled Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk.

For those who need a lore refresher, Luke Gygax was one of the original playtesters of Dungeons & Dragons. He famously created and played Melf (of Melf’s Acid Arrow fame), a prince of the elves in his father’s original World of Greyhawk campaign.

While Greyhawk was featured as the “default” setting for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, fans have long called for a dedicated sourcebook. Luke noted that he had originally been working on an unofficial project, but WotC stepped in to bring it into the official canon.

“Greyhawk was not supported for a long time officially, but there’s a huge community that loves it,” Luke said during the briefing. “I’m excited to keep the Gygax in Greyhawk.”

What to Expect in the New Book:

  • Official Adventures: Luke will be penning a series of new adventures set within the Flanaess.

  • Lore Expansion: New details on the elven courts and the history of Melf, aka Prince Brightflame.

  • Classic “Modules” Return: Dan Ayoub confirmed that WotC is bringing back the classic soft-cover “module” format as part of their new distribution model.

While Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk does not have a firm release date yet, industry speculation points toward a January 2027 launch to kick off the new year.

This move marks a significant cultural shift for Dungeons & Dragons. For years, the relationship between the Gygax estate and Wizards of the Coast was characterized by legal distance. By bringing Luke Gygax back as a primary architect for Greyhawk, the D&D design team is signaling a deep respect for the game’s “Old School” roots while pushing the 2024 ruleset forward.
