Free RPG Day Saturday, June 27, 2026
Free RPG Day is officially scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2026
Whether you are a seasoned Dungeon Master with a library of sourcebooks or someone who has only ever watched people play on Twitch, this event is designed for you. It’s a worldwide celebration that drives foot traffic to Friendly Local Game Stores (FLGS) and showers the community in free adventures, quickstarts, and exclusive gaming gear.
The Origin Story: Rolling for Initiative (2007)
Free RPG Day wasn’t born in a tavern, but it was heavily inspired by another massive nerd holiday: Free Comic Book Day.
Back in 2004, Wizards of the Coast gave away a comic called Crisis in Raimiton for Free Comic Book Day. It was a unique hybrid booklet that followed a group of friends playing Dungeons & Dragons, paired with the actual character sheets they used. The giveaway was a massive hit and proved that players were hungry for physical, accessible entry points into tabletop gaming.
Seeing an opportunity to revitalize the hobby market, Aldo Ghiozzi of the marketing and distribution firm Impressions Advertising & Marketing officially launched the very first Free RPG Day on June 23, 2007.
The concept was beautifully simple:
-
Publishers would print exclusive, high-quality, beginner-friendly adventures or quickstart rulebooks.
-
Retailers would purchase “kits” containing these items to distribute.
-
Gamers could walk into any participating storefront and pick up a shiny piece of new loot for exactly $0.00.
Over the last two decades, the event has grown exponentially. In 2019, coordination of the event was acquired by Gaming Days, the retail organization that keeps the tradition thriving today. It serves as a vital ecosystem driver, giving indie publishers a massive platform while allowing legacy giants to test out brand-new systems.
How It Works: The Rules of the Day
If you’ve never been, it’s important to understand the “meta” of Free RPG Day so you don’t miss out:
-
It’s In-Store Only: You cannot order these physical items online. You must physically cross the threshold of a participating brick-and-mortar game store.
-
Every Store Handles Distribution Differently: Because space and stock are limited, stores use different rules. Some give everyone one or two items of their choice. Others operate on a lottery, or give extra items to people who sign up to run or play games in-store that day. Call your local shop ahead of time to ask how they run things!
-
Global Logistics Note (UK Players): Due to a US Customs delay completely unrelated to the event itself, the official kits bound for the UK are unfortunately on hold and will be rescheduled for a later date. Keep an eye on local UK retailer pages for updates!
2026 Treasure Trove: The Highlights & Offerings
Publishers pull out all the stops for Free RPG Day, offering everything from legendary fantasy modules to sci-fi quickstarts and entirely new game engines. Early schedules and retailer sign-ups have revealed some of the absolute coolest items you can expect to hunt down on June 27th:
1. Fantasy & Old School Renaissance (OSR)
-
Goodman Games – Pretenders to the Rat King’s Throne: Goodman Games is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style! For Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) fans, this adventure is a direct, nostalgic nod to the legendary DCC #1: Idylls of the Rat King, bringing a classic sewer-crawling twist to your table.
-
1985 Games – Obojima: A Great Cat-Astrophe: Designed for D&D 5E (and the updated 2024 rules), this Studio Ghibli-esque, light-hearted fantasy puts you in the shoes of a youth scout troop roped into an adventure by an eccentric Cat Spirit. (Note: Due to shipping windows, this is exclusive to US kits).
-
Exalted Funeral – Dolmenwood Quick-Start RPG: For players who love dark, whimsical, fairy-tale folklore, this quickstart opens the door to the deeply atmospheric world of Dolmenwood.
-
Paizo – Pathfinder: Things Go to Hell: Paizo rarely misses Free RPG Day, and this year’s Pathfinder module promises their signature blend of high-stakes tactical combat and deep fantasy lore.
2. Science Fiction & Cosmic Horror

-
Free League – Vaesen: Nordic Horror Roleplaying: Step into the mythic north of the 19th century to track down creatures from folklore that normal humans can no longer see.
Why You Should Go
Tabletop RPGs are unique. They are a collaborative, deeply social medium that forces us to put down our phones, look our friends in the eye, and build an unforgettable story together over a handful of funny-shaped plastic dice.
Free RPG Day completely strips away the financial barrier to entry. It gives you a completely free book, pre-generated characters, and a community of people waiting to welcome you to the table.
Mark your calendar for June 27th, find your local shop using the official Free RPG Day store locator, and get ready to roll!
