May the D20 Be With You: Official D&D Star Wars Crossover Revealed at Gen Con

In one of the most unexpected twists to come out of the Dungeons & Dragons Keynote at Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) officially revealed that an official D&D Star Wars crossover is currently in development.

The reveal was handled with dramatic flair: at the end of the presentation following core design updates, Darth Vader himself walked onto the stage. The Dark Lord ignited a red lightsaber, stood in silence for a few seconds, and walked off, leaving the crowd reeling.

Here is everything we know so far about D&D’s upcoming venture into a galaxy far, far away.

What We Know About the D&D Star Wars Crossover

While WotC kept specific product details and book titles close to the chest, several key facts were confirmed during the announcement:

  • Part of D&D Universes Beyond: The Star Wars crossover will be the second major property under WotC’s newly announced D&D Universes Beyond banner, following the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion.

  • Slated for Mid-2027: The crossover will serve as the centerpiece for the Season of Rebellion, a thematic release push scheduled to run from July to September 2027.

  • Built on the 5.5E Rules Engine: Like other Universes Beyond products, the expansion will adapt the core 5E mechanics to match Star Wars lore and combat.

Star Wars and D&D: A Long Tabletop History

While a direct D&D-branded Star Wars book is new, the connection between Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars in the tabletop space goes back decades:

1. The Official WotC d20 Era (2000–2010)

Wizards of the Coast previously held the Star Wars RPG license. In 2000, they published the official Star Wars Roleplaying Game using the classic D&D 3rd Edition d20 system. That line culminated in 2007’s Star Wars Saga Edition, a beloved system co-designed by Chris Perkins (who later became a key architect of D&D 5E).

2. The Fan-Made “SW5e” Phenomenon (2018)

In 2018, developer Galiphile created SW5e (Star Wars 5E), a fan-made overhaul of the D&D 5th Edition ruleset tailored for Star Wars adventures. It quickly became a massive hit in the homebrew community, featuring custom classes, Force powers, blasters, and starship combat rules before the creator eventually stepped away due to burnout in 2020.

3. Other Major Star Wars TTRPG Eras

Beyond WotC, Star Wars tabletop history includes the iconic West End Games d6 system (1987)—which established much of the early Expanded Universe canon—and Fantasy Flight Games’ narrative dice systems (Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, Force and Destiny).

What to Expect Next

With the Season of Rebellion scheduled for July 2027, WotC has plenty of time to refine how Force powers, lightsabers, species, and starships will fit into official 5E rules.

The crossover represents a massive milestone for both franchises. Bringing one of the world’s largest sci-fi properties into the world’s most popular tabletop RPG engine will undoubtedly draw huge attention from casual fans and veteran roleplayers alike.
