Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Video Game Going To Ravenloft

Gamescom 2026 yielded significant announcements for tabletop RPG enthusiasts and action-adventure gamers. Wizards of the Coast and Montreal-based developer Invoke Studios unveiled the first gameplay footage and crucial narrative details for their upcoming open-world title, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons.

Departing from the traditional dice-rolling and turn-based mechanics of recent successes like Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock is forging a path into real-time, systemic magic and third-person melee combat.

Here is a breakdown of what was revealed in Cologne, the deep lore connections uncovered, and what players can expect from this dark fantasy adventure.

The Story: A Pact Born of Desperation

In Warlock, players step into the boots of Kaatri, a seasoned weapons master searching for a lost loved one. Voiced by Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer), Kaatri’s desperation leads her to make a dangerous pact with none other than the legendary witch queen Tasha (also known as Iggwilv), voiced by Maggie Robertson (Resident Evil Village).

As Kaatri’s Warlock Patron, Tasha grants her access to raw, forbidden magic in exchange for furthering her own mysterious agenda. This bargain grants Kaatri unique abilities—and leaves a distinct magical mark over her eye.

Joining Kaatri on her journey is Skev, a winged imp familiar native to the realm who offers both dark comedic relief and practical utility during exploration.

Setting the Scene: Darkon and the Ravenloft Lore

While many D&D games stick to the Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk, Warlock takes a sharp turn into the gothic horror of Ravenloft. The game is set in Darkon, one of the infamous Domains of Dread.

Usually surrounded by impenetrable mists, Darkon is currently in a state of volatile collapse. Its ruling Dark Lord, the lich-king Azalin Rex, has vanished, leaving the domain leaderless.

Ravenloft lore enthusiasts noted that during the gameplay demo, Castle Avernus appeared intact rather than in its usual state of perpetual magical ruin, hinting that the story takes place prior to Azalin’s attempted escape from his realm.

Gameplay & Magic Mechanics: Expressive, Sandbox Systems

Invoke Studios confirmed that Warlock ditches the D&D 5e ruleset in favor of a fluid, action-heavy experience. Citing immersive sim influences like Deus Ex, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs, the developers showcased an open-world design built around “expressive magic” and player agency.

Instead of cluttered HUD markers, exploration relies heavily on organic discovery. Players can talk to local villagers, follow tracks, and uncover hidden “mysteries” and side quests across settlements.

By combining spells with environment mechanics—such as using Tasha’s Leash to pull a stone pillar onto a ferocious Death’s Kiss (a beholder-kin) or using Witch Bolt through standing water—players are encouraged to improvise solutions to both puzzles and combat encounters.
