Classic Dungeons & Dragons Video Game CRPG Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor Returns on November 6

Fans of classic computer role-playing games will soon have a chance to revisit one of the more ambitious Dungeons & Dragons titles of the early 2000s. Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor is being restored for modern platforms and will launch digitally on Steam and GOG.com on November 6.

Published by SNEG in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, the re-release marks the first time the game will be officially available through digital storefronts. Players won’t have to wait until launch to experience it, however. A playable demo is available during Steam Next Fest through October 26, with progress carrying over to the full game.

Originally developed by Stormfront Studios and released by Ubisoft in 2001, Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor is a turn-based party RPG set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. As a successor to the legendary Pool of Radiance lineage, the game combines tactical combat, deep character customization, and a classic fantasy adventure rooted in official Dungeons & Dragons rules.

A Journey Back to Myth Drannor

The story begins when a newly discovered Pool of Radiance unleashes a wave of corruption across the Forgotten Realms. In response, the famed wizard Elminster recruits a party of adventurers to uncover the source of the spreading evil and stop it before it engulfs Faerûn.

Players create a party of heroes and venture into the ruined elven city of Myth Drannor, battling monsters, exploring sprawling dungeons, and developing characters through increasingly powerful spells and abilities. With more than 100 hours of gameplay, the adventure offers a substantial experience for both longtime D&D fans and newcomers to classic RPGs.

The game supports multiple combat styles, allowing players to choose traditional turn-based encounters or enable a timed-turn option that creates a faster-paced experience.

Modern Enhancements for Today’s Players

One of the primary goals of the restoration is making the game accessible and enjoyable on modern hardware while preserving its original identity.

The updated release includes:

  • Widescreen support with resolutions up to 4K
  • Upscaled background assets for sharper visuals
  • Full controller support
  • Reworked camera controls
  • An enhanced user interface with improved scaling and tooltips
  • A new action bar for streamlined gameplay
  • Adjustable combat animation speeds
  • Steam Achievements and Cloud Saves
  • Steam Deck compatibility
  • Numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements

For purists, an optional Legacy Mode preserves the original gameplay and visual presentation, allowing players to experience the game much as it appeared in 2001.

Classic D&D Gameplay

Built around official Dungeons & Dragons mechanics, Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor offers players a wide range of races, classes, spells, and character progression options. Adventurers can build a six-character party, creating up to four custom heroes and recruiting two additional companions throughout the journey.

Characters can advance to level 16 and gain access to powerful spells up to 8th level, creating plenty of opportunities for strategic party building and tactical combat.

Preserving a Lost RPG

According to SNEG Director Artem Shchuiko, the restoration aims to bring an important piece of Dungeons & Dragons gaming history back to players after years of limited accessibility.

While Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor was ambitious for its time, running the original release on modern systems has become increasingly difficult. The new version focuses on preserving the game’s strengths while introducing compatibility improvements, technical fixes, and modern conveniences that make it easier than ever to experience this Forgotten Realms adventure.

With a digital debut finally arriving on Steam and GOG.com, both nostalgic veterans and curious newcomers will soon be able to explore the haunted ruins of Myth Drannor once again.
