Bringing Silver Screen Terrors to the Table: Paizo Expands 13 Omens with Cult Horror Classics

If you like your tabletop roleplaying games with a side of cinematic dread, Paizo’s upcoming horror project just got a major upgrade. Known primarily for sprawling high-fantasy epics like Pathfinder and Starfinder, Paizo is stepping firmly into the shadows with 13 Omens—a modern, supernatural, rules-lite horror TTRPG designed by industry veterans Jason Bulmahn, Joe Pasini, Erik Mona, and James Jacobs, which we took a look at the preview here.

Rather than sticking strictly to original lore, the team is infusing the game with heavy-hitting cinematic nostalgia, adapting legendary cult movies and gothic horror masterpieces straight into playable tabletop modules.

What is 13 Omens?

Before diving into the silver-screen adaptations, it helps to understand how the game operates. 13 Omens is built as a narrative-driven experience set in a dark reflection of our own world. Players navigate bloodthirsty killers, cursed environments, and occult secrets using a unique mechanical hook: an opaque bag filled with custom dice.

The game utilizes Safe Dice and Omen Dice. As players take actions and delve deeper into a mystery, the pool of Omen Dice grows, threatening to wound or kill characters who push their luck too far. It’s tense, atmospheric, and built to emulate the mounting dread of a classic horror movie.

Bringing Cult Cinema and Hammer Horror to the Table

Paizo is leaning hard into cinematic horror history by incorporating officially licensed adventures based on pillars of 20th-century horror cinema.

  • Re-Animator (1985): Stuart Gordon’s legendary cult classic—itself loosely adapted from H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West–Reanimator—is making the jump to the table. Players take on the roles of reckless medical students experimenting with a glowing green serum that brings dead tissue back to life. True to the film, the resurrected rarely cooperate, paving the way for chaotic, blood-soaked black comedy and splatter-horror.

  • Scars of Dracula (1970): For gothic horror fans, Paizo is dipping into the rich legacy of Hammer Film Productions. This module adapts the classic Christopher Lee vehicle, transporting players to Transylvania and the ominous shadow of Karlsbad, where eerie bat attacks and psychological terror await.

  • Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971): Another Hammer classic, based on Bram Stoker’s The Jewel of Seven Stars. This adventure plunges investigators into a chilling archaeological mystery involving an ancient Egyptian queen, Tera, whose modern reincarnation threatens to unleash cosmic horrors.

Where to Find It

The project has 10 days to go on it’s kickstarter campaign as of this post, offering core rulebooks, zines filled with standalone terrifying tales, and custom dice kits featuring the signature Omen bag.

Whether you want to play a desperate medical student stitching together spare parts or an ill-fated tourist uncovering vampire cults in Eastern Europe, 13 Omens is shaping up to be an exciting playground for horror buffs looking for a change of pace from traditional high-fantasy dungeon crawling.
