A New D&D Adventure Looms, Brand New D&D Video Game On The Way

The dice have been rolled, and a new adventure is on the horizon for “Dungeons & Dragons” fans! Wizards of the Coast, the venerable owner of the “D&D” IP, has announced an exciting new single-player action-adventure game set in the beloved fantasy world, moving beyond its hugely successful “Baldur’s Gate” franchise.

This untitled project is being developed by the newly formed game studio Giant Skull, marking what Wizards of the Coast, a Hasbro subsidiary, calls “a definitive moment in both companies’ gaming ambitions.” Currently in development for PC and console, this new game comes as part of an exclusive publishing agreement between Wizards and Giant Skull.

This announcement follows the conclusion of Wizards’ collaboration with Larian Studios, the acclaimed developers behind the critically lauded “Baldur’s Gate 3.” While “Baldur’s Gate 3” has left an undeniable mark on the gaming landscape, Wizards is clearly eager to explore new narratives and gameplay experiences within the expansive “D&D” universe.

And this isn’t the only exciting title in Wizards of the Coast’s expanding digital portfolio! Their growing lineup includes:

  • Exodus: An epic sci-fi RPG promising an emotional story for players.
  • A game centered on Snake Eyes, the iconic ninja/commando from “G.I. Joe.”
  • Another “Dungeons & Dragons” action-adventure game focused on magic.
  • An untitled project from Skeleton Key that’s rumored to blend suspense, horror, and memorable gameplay.
  • Continued expansion and development of the popular online card game “Magic: The Gathering Arena.”

Leading the charge at Giant Skull is CEO Stig Asmussen, a name that will undoubtedly resonate with many gamers. Asmussen most recently served as game director for “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” and “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” at Respawn Entertainment and EA. His impressive resume also includes stints as game director on “God of War III” and art director for “God of War II” at Sony Santa Monica. Founded in 2023, Giant Skull boasts a pedigree that promises high-quality storytelling and engaging gameplay.

John Hight, Chief of Wizards of the Coast and President of Digital Gaming at Hasbro, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Stig and the team at Giant Skull are exactly the type of exceptionally talented creators we want to work with, and I’m so happy to be reuniting with him on this new project. In our time working together on ‘God of War’ I got to see firsthand Stig’s artistry and expertise, and he and the Giant Skull team are the perfect fit for our new game. Worldbuilding and storytelling is in our DNA, and this collaboration reflects our evolution and commitment to our ‘Playing to Win’ strategy, building a stronger presence in digital play. We look forward to revealing more about this brand-new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ game in the future.”

Asmussen echoed Hight’s excitement, stating, “Our talented and experienced team at Giant Skull is built on creativity and curiosity. Our goal is to craft a rich new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”

With such experienced hands at the helm and a clear vision for a new era of “D&D” video games, the future looks incredibly promising. While details are still scarce, the prospect of a fresh single-player action-adventure set in the sprawling “Dungeons & Dragons” world, guided by a team with such a strong track record, is enough to get any adventurer’s heart racing. Keep your eyes peeled for more information as this exciting new chapter in the “D&D” digital legacy unfolds!
