Settling on the Screen: Netflix Acquires Catan Rights for Massive Film & TV Adaptation Slate

The world of tabletop gaming is officially becoming a cinematic universe. Netflix has just rolled a game-changing ‘7’ with the announcement that it has acquired the exclusive global rights to adapt the beloved board game Catan into a wide-ranging slate of film and television projects.

The deal with publisher Asmodee Entertainment and Catan GmbH (run by the family of late creator Klaus Teuber) signals a significant bet on the enduring popularity and storytelling potential of the strategic resource-management phenomenon.

More Than Just Roads and Settlements

For those who have spent countless hours trading sheep for wheat, the news is a fascinating prospect. Since its debut in 1995 (originally as The Settlers of Catan), the game has sold over 45 million copies globally, becoming a true pop culture staple. But how exactly will the experience of building settlements, trading resources, and navigating the island of Catan translate to the screen?

Netflix’s ambitious plan covers all the bases:

  • Live-Action Films & Series: Expect scripted drama exploring the intense competition, shifting alliances, and survival on the resource-scarce fictional island. The core themes of exploration, colonization, and resource conflict offer a rich backdrop for compelling narrative.
  • Animated Projects: Animation opens the door to visually capturing the distinct world-building of Catan, perhaps exploring its mythology or offering a lighter, more adventure-focused take.
  • Unscripted Formats: While details are scarce, the mention of “unscripted” projects could suggest anything from a reality competition series based on the game’s mechanics (a la a potential Squid Game meets resource management) to documentary-style looks at the competitive Catan community.
  • Video Games: The deal also includes the development of Catan-inspired video games, further expanding the brand’s digital footprint.

A New Chapter for a Gaming Icon

The creative vision for the adaptation is set to be guided by a producing team that includes Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, the sons of the game’s late creator, Klaus Teuber. Roy Lee (producer of The Lego Movie and It) is also attached, lending significant Hollywood weight to the project.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada, highlighted the built-in drama, stating, “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama.”

For the Teuber family, this collaboration is a continuation of their father’s vision. “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together,” said Benjamin and Guido Teuber. “Now, we’re thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage.”

Netflix’s Expanding Game-to-Screen Portfolio

The Catan deal is part of Netflix’s aggressive strategy to turn popular games into major franchises. The streamer has already found major success with adaptations like Arcane (based on League of Legends) and Castlevania, and has numerous other projects in development, including adaptations of Assassin’s Creed, Exploding Kittens, and even a reality competition based on Monopoly.

The versatility of the Catan IP—with its strategic depth, simple-yet-engaging premise, and dedicated global fanbase—makes it a perfect candidate for a multi-format franchise. It is a world where trade-offs and difficult choices drive the narrative, a universal human story ripe for dramatization.

Whether you’re a long-time “Settler” hoping to see the Robber finally get his cinematic due, or a newcomer ready to discover the drama behind the wood and sheep, keep an eye on the horizon. Netflix is ready to roll the dice and settle a whole new world of entertainment.
