Fantasy Grounds is Now Completely Free-to-Play

Fantasy Grounds is officially going free-to-play!

Announced at the recent FG Con 2025 Online event, developer SmiteWorks has completely eliminated the upfront software cost for both players and Game Masters (GMs). This is a massive pivot for one of the oldest and most feature-rich VTTs on the market, instantly making its powerful automation and vast library accessible to everyone.

The End of the Paywall: What is Now Free?

For two decades, Fantasy Grounds was known as a “premium” VTT, requiring an upfront license fee (either the $50 Ultimate license or a subscription) just to host a game for friends who didn’t own the software. That barrier is now gone.

Effective immediately, the core Fantasy Grounds VTT application is 100% free to download and use.

  • Free Game Hosting: Any user can now download the software and host a game for an unlimited number of players at no cost.
  • Free Player Access: All players can join and play in any game with zero financial barrier.
  • Free Rulesets & Assets: The free software comes bundled with core SRD (System Reference Document) rulesets for popular systems like Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition and Pathfinder 2nd Edition, along with numerous free tokens, maps, and art assets.
  • No Subscription Required: This is a key difference from many competitors. Fantasy Grounds has removed the single-purchase license without replacing it with a mandatory monthly subscription to access core features.

The Strategy: Accessibility Through Automation

Why the drastic shift? SmiteWorks is tackling the biggest obstacle to new user adoption: the initial cost.

As Smiteworks Chief Development Officer Adam Bradford explained, their goal is to drive customers directly to the immense marketplace:

“By removing the software costs entirely, we’re making it possible for someone to simply buy the box set module and start playing for around $20 to $30 instead.”

Fantasy Grounds’ primary strength has always been its high degree of automation. Unlike VTTs that require extensive user setup and community modules for complex rules, Fantasy Grounds works seamlessly out-of-the-box. The new model leverages this: get the powerful tool for free, and pay for the high-quality, officially licensed content you want to use.

Introducing the Online Reader (Beta)

Alongside the free-to-play announcement, SmiteWorks also launched the beta of their new Online Reader.

  • What it is: A web-based tool that allows users to access their entire purchased Fantasy Grounds library (rules, adventures, setting guides) directly through a web browser on any device.
  • Why it Matters: This eliminates the need to launch the desktop application just to look up a rule or check a stat block. It dramatically improves the utility of the content purchased in the Fantasy Grounds store, bringing it closer to the functionality of competitors like D&D Beyond. The team is currently working to convert their massive catalogue of over 4,000 products for the Online Reader.

What About Existing License Holders?

SmiteWorks recognized the loyalty of its existing customers who paid for licenses, some for up to $150. They have introduced a Loyalty Rewards Program where previous license holders can claim special, exclusive rewards in the form of modules, cosmetic assets, and other digital content.

Existing users should check the official Fantasy Grounds store website to claim their compensation package before the stated deadline (likely January 1, 2026).

Impact on the VTT Market

Fantasy Grounds’ move to free-to-play is a direct challenge to the entire VTT ecosystem:

  • Challenging Roll20: It removes the core competitive edge Roll20 had as the default free-entry option, especially since Fantasy Grounds offers more integrated automation for complex rulesets like D&D and Pathfinder right out of the box.
  • Challenging Foundry: While Foundry VTT’s one-time purchase model was a great value proposition for GMs, Fantasy Grounds has now completely undercut that cost barrier, potentially attracting GMs who prefer the simple “just works” automation over the customizability of Foundry.

This massive change lowers the barrier to entry for one of the most powerful tools in TTRPG history, promising a wave of new GMs and players to the platform.
