Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Video Game Announced At The Game Awards

The world of Dungeons & Dragons is expanding its digital reach once again, but this time, it’s trading dice rolls for dark pacts! At The Game Awards 2025, Wizards of the Coast and developer Invoke Studios (formerly Tuque Games, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, you can  Read our review here) officially unveiled Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons—a brand-new, single-player action-adventure game.

Stepping far away from the party-based, turn-based combat popularized by Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock is set to deliver a focused, cinematic, and dark fantasy experience centered entirely on one of D&D’s most intriguing classes.

Embracing the Warlock Fantasy

The game puts players into the role of Kaatri, a veteran warrior who has made a dangerous pact to wield forbidden, otherworldly magic. Her journey, steeped in the high-stakes lore of the warlock class and their patrons, is a core theme. Adding a layer of star power, Kaatri is brought to life through full performance capture by the acclaimed actress Tricia Helfer (known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer).

Creative leads at Invoke Studios explained that the warlock class was chosen specifically for its high-charisma flavor and the unique tension of deriving power from a supernatural, often sinister entity.

“We’re not trying to simulate the tabletop RPG experience, so there is no dice-rolling in the game — we’re trying to really deliver a video-game experience first,” said Dominic Guay, studio lead at Invoke Studios, in an interview with IGN. “If you are not familiar with Dungeons and Dragons, you are not going to feel friction, like in that you’re missing details of the world. But if you are a fan of the universe, you are going to be really excited about what we are doing with the lore of the series for Warlock.”

 Third-Person Action-Adventure, Not Traditional RPG

Invoke Studios was clear about the game’s direction: this is a third-person, single-player, open-world action-adventure title, not a traditional turn-based RPG.

Feature Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Deviation from Traditional D&D RPGs
Genre Third-Person Action-Adventure Focuses on visceral, real-time combat and exploration.
Character Control Single Protagonist (Kaatri) No party management or traditional companion system.
Core Mechanic Expressive, Immersive Magic The developers confirmed no dice-rolling to simulate tabletop mechanics.
World Open World, Single-Player Focused Emphasizes exploration and linear narrative momentum.

The core gameplay loop is built around “immersive, expressive magic.” Players will need to use Kaatri’s spells and abilities to:

  • Combat Monsters: Combining powerful Eldritch blasts with her warrior background’s melee prowess.

  • Solve Puzzles: Using magic in creative ways to interact with and unlock environmental challenges.

  • Explore: Spells act as keys to traversing the dark and unsettling open world.

The studio cited inspirations from games known for player agency and problem-solving, suggesting a design that encourages creative use of the warlock’s unique toolkit.

Looking Ahead: Release Window and Gameplay Reveal

While The Game Awards reveal provided a dark and enticing cinematic teaser, concrete gameplay details are still under wraps.

  • Gameplay Debut: Slated for Summer 2026.

  • Planned Launch: The game is currently targeting a release window sometime in 2027.

  • Platforms: Announced for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons represents a bold new direction for the D&D video game franchise, proving that there’s room for more than just classic CRPGs under the brand. By focusing on the unique flavor of a single class and leaning into cinematic action, Invoke Studios hopes to deliver a compelling narrative experience for both D&D veterans and newcomers alike.
