Baldur’s Gate Tv Show In The Works For HBO
HBO is looking to cast Greater Restoration on the high-fantasy genre with a massive new project.
According to a report from Deadline, a Baldur’s Gate television series is officially in development. Following the colossal success of Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, HBO is looking to bridge the gap between gaming and prestige television once again.
Here is everything we know about the journey back to Faerûn.
The Dungeon Master: Craig Mazin
If there is one person fans can trust with a beloved gaming IP, it’s Craig Mazin. The co-creator of HBO’s The Last of Us and the mastermind behind Chernobyl is spearheading the project.
Mazin isn’t just a “hired gun” for the project; he’s a massive fan. He claims to have logged nearly 1,000 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3 and has been a weekly D&D player for the last 15 years.
“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it,” Mazin told Deadline.
A New Party, A Familiar World
The show is set to be a continuation of the story established in the Larian RPG, but don’t expect a direct retelling of the game’s campaign. Here’s how the narrative is shaping up:
-
Fresh Faces: The show will center on a new party of low-level adventurers as they gain power and influence.
-
The BG3 Connection: While the original BioWare games (BG1 and BG2) are reportedly not being used as official source material, the show will draw heavily from the world and characters established in Baldur’s Gate 3.
-
Cameos & Meddling: Existing icons from the game are expected to appear. These powerful figures will reportedly “help or hinder” the new heroes as they navigate the Forgotten Realms.
-
Voice Talent: Mazin reportedly intends to reach out to the original Baldur’s Gate 3 voice cast for potential involvement, which is a massive win for fans of the game’s award-winning performances.
Who Owns the Story?
While Larian Studios has officially moved on from the D&D license to focus on their own Divinity series, the rights to the Baldur’s Gate characters remain with Wizards of the Coast. This allows HBO to move forward with the IP while Larian pursues its next original RPG venture.
