D&D and Magic: The Gathering Teams Announce Intent to Unionize

The teams behind two of the biggest intellectual properties in gaming—Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering (alongside Duel Masters and D&D Beyond)—have officially announced their intent to form a union.

The workers have joined forces under the United Wizards of the Coast – CWA (UWOTC-CWA) banner, following in the footsteps of the MTG Arena development team, which successfully unionized earlier this year.

What Prompted the Movement?

In statements released by the organizing committees, designers, writers, artists, producers, and QA professionals made it clear that their drive stems from a deep love for the games they create—and a desire to protect the people who make them.

The newly expanded union’s core platform focuses on several critical demands facing modern game industry workers:

  • Pushback Against Generative AI: One of the most prominent rallying cries is establishing robust, enforceable policies against the encroachment of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI tools. Workers are demanding that corporate leadership respect creative labor rather than forcing automated tools onto teams.

  • Fair Compensation & Career Growth: Demands include wages that accurately reflect industry work, clear career progression structures, and reliable, accessible healthcare.

  • Job Security & Sustainable Workloads: Amid widespread tech and gaming industry instability, the union aims to combat burnout, secure sustainable workloads, and protect hybrid and remote working conditions.

  • Intellectual Property Rights: The union is pushing back against clauses that allow Wizards of the Coast to claim ownership over creative works produced by employees entirely in their free time, unrelated to company IP.

Expanding the “United Wizards” Footprint

By incorporating the core Dungeons & Dragons tabletop team and Magic’s “Studio X”, this move brings virtually all major pillars of Wizards of the Coast under prospective union representation.

The campaign has officially asked Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast leadership for voluntary recognition. Historically, corporate parent companies have pushed back against similar organizing efforts—previously characterizing unions to employees as “third-party” interference and warning that negotiations could yield varied results. However, the overwhelming success of the Arena team’s election has galvanized morale across the studio floors.

How the Community is Responding

Fans and industry peers have rallied quickly behind the announcement, launching public petitions to urge Hasbro leadership to voluntarily recognize the union without putting workers through a protracted National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election battle.

As this story develops, it marks a monumental turning point for tabletop RPG and trading card game creators, signaling that the people behind our favorite worlds are standing together to shape a more sustainable future for the industry.
