Following years of outsourcing its tabletop RPG operations to external publishers, White Wolf—operating under parent company Paradox Interactive—is officially bringing the development and publishing of the World of Darkness entirely in-house.
This massive structural pivot explains the major announcements rocking the community, including the surprise reveal of Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition (VtM6) and the winding down of their multi-year licensing partnership with Renegade Game Studios.
1. The End of the Renegade Era
For the past several years, Renegade Game Studios served as the primary engine behind physical World of Darkness TTRPG releases, steering lines like Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5), Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and Hunter: The Reckoning.
However, official transition notices confirm that Renegade and White Wolf’s publishing partnership will formally wrap up.
-
The Transition Timeline: Renegade will continue to fulfill and sell existing World of Darkness titles through the end of the year, after which the catalog will leave Renegade’s storefront.
-
What Happens to Existing Books? Digital PDFs purchased through Renegade will remain accessible in customer accounts, but physical inventory will transition out as White Wolf prepares to handle everything internally starting in 2027.
2. From Brand Overseers to Active Developers
When Paradox Interactive originally acquired White Wolf back in 2015, the studio largely transitioned into a licensing, lore-policing, and brand-management entity rather than a hands-on design house.
That dynamic has completely changed. Under leadership including Creative Director Jess Lanzillo and Lead Game Designer Diogo Nogueira, White Wolf has actively staffed up an in-house development team. Rather than simply leasing out the intellectual property to third parties, White Wolf is taking direct creative ownership of its flagship game lines—with V6 acting as the flagship proof-of-concept for this new era.
3. A Shift in Aesthetic and Design Philosophy
Industry insiders and early previews of V6 indicate that bringing the brand back to a dedicated in-house team is also changing the artistic and atmospheric direction of the game.
While V5 leaned heavily into modern, high-contrast, photorealistic layouts, White Wolf’s new direction favors a return to heavily stylized illustration and classic gothic-punk vibes. It’s a deliberate effort to pivot away from the hyper-serious, alternative-fashion presentation of the late 2010s and back toward the moody, atmospheric art styles that defined the classic era of the World of Darkness.
Looking Ahead to 2027 and Beyond
By reclaiming the license and launching an ambitious, clean-slate 6th edition, White Wolf is betting big on its own re-emergence as an active tabletop publisher. While transitioning away from Renegade marks the end of a stable era for fans who collected those specific sourcebooks, it paves the way for a unified, completely in-house future for the Kindred.
The Night is Changing: What We Know About Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition
1. A Streamlined and Dynamic Rules Engine
The primary goal of the sixth edition is to make playing and running Vampire faster, punchier, and more fluid. To achieve this, White Wolf is overhauling core mechanics with several new resource systems:
-
Vitae Simplification: The new system combines Health and Blood Points into a single, streamlined Vitae resource.
-
Drama & Quickening: Storytellers gain a new Drama resource to introduce unexpected twists or complicate character lives. Meanwhile, players earn Quickening when they roll well, which can be spent to boost future checks.
-
Choose Your Pain & Humanity Rework: The Humanity tracker is getting a significant mechanical overhaul. The new Humanity Scale tracks the ongoing tug-of-war between a character’s human soul and inner monster, utilizing customized poles dictated by clan and player choices alongside a brand-new Beast/Nature tracker.
2. Character Creation and the 14 Clans
Character creation is being built from the ground up to support a vast array of undead archetypes in a single core book.
-
The Clans: The core rulebook will feature 14 clans. The alpha playtest currently features seven: the Brujah, Gangrel, Lasombra, The Ministry, Nosferatu, Toreador, and Ventrue.
-
Broader Supernatural Types: Beyond standard neonates, the game will include rules for creating ghouls, duskborn, ancillae, caitiff, and elders.
3. Lore Continuity Meets Mechanical Break
While the rules are undergoing a radical evolution, White Wolf has confirmed that players won’t have to throw away their bookshelves.
-
Metaplot Carries Over: Many of the characters and major plot developments established in Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) will remain relevant.
-
Compatibility Note: Despite the lore continuity, VtM6 will not be fully backwards-compatible with V5 due to the structural rewrite of the rules engine.
4. The End of an Era: White Wolf and Renegade
The transition to VtM6 coincides with a major structural shift behind the scenes. White Wolf is expanding its internal development team, signaling the conclusion of its long-running publishing partnership with Renegade Game Studios (notably foreshadowed by Renegade shifting focus toward other properties, such as its upcoming tabletop RPG based on the Anne Rice television universe).
Looking further ahead, White Wolf has hinted that other iconic World of Darkness properties—including Vampire: The Dark Ages, Mage: The Ascension, and Changeling: The Dreaming—are being evaluated for future revamps using this same sixth-edition rules engine.
