Games Workshop Announce Kill Team: Tomb World
Necrons Awaken: A New Chapter for Warhammer 40,000 and Kill Team
The air of the 41st Millennium is thick with the buzz of new pre-orders, and for fans of tactical skirmishes, a massive new release is about to drop. Games Workshop has announced Kill Team: Tomb World, a comprehensive boxed set that pits the elite xenocidal specialists of the Deathwatch against a newly awakened Necron tomb complex. This release is a major event, not just for Kill Team players, but for anyone who loves the Necron faction or wants to start a new army. Let’s take a deep dive into what this new box brings to the table.
The Lore: What is a “Tomb World”?
For those new to the grimdark universe, a “Tomb World” is a planet that serves as a vast, subterranean tomb for the Necron race. After a bloody war that spanned the galaxy millions of years ago, the Necrons—a race of undying, skeletal machine-warriors—chose to enter a state of stasis, awaiting a time when they could reclaim the stars. They slumbered in vast tomb complexes, deep beneath the surface of countless worlds.
When a Tomb World awakens, it spells doom for any living inhabitants. The planet’s surface is transformed as impossibly ancient monoliths rise from the ground, legions of Necron Warriors and sinister constructs crawl from their crypts, and the planet’s very atmosphere becomes charged with the eerie green glow of their arcane technology. The Kill Team: Tomb World set is focused on the very beginning of such a cataclysmic event, as a small, elite force attempts to prevent a full-scale awakening.
The Boxed Set: What’s Inside?
Kill Team: Tomb World is a treasure trove for hobbyists and players alike. It contains two brand-new Kill Teams, an incredible amount of modular terrain, and a mission dossier to kick off your new narrative campaigns.
The Factions
- The Deathwatch: This elite team is the Imperium’s last line of defense against alien threats. The new Deathwatch Kill Team box is highly flexible, offering a wide array of options for customization. The sprues include a variety of heads and shoulder pads, each representing a different Space Marine Chapter, allowing players to truly personalize their team of alien-slaying veterans. This kit is a fantastic entry point for anyone wanting to play Deathwatch, providing everything needed to build a versatile team of operatives.
- The Necrons: Representing the awakened Tomb World are the new Necron Canoptek Circle. This kill team is led by a powerful Necron Geomancer and features a variety of chilling Canoptek constructs, including Tomb Crawlers, an Accelerator, and a Reanimator. The set also includes 10 Necron Warriors and three Scarab Swarms, which can be used as Necron Host operatives in the narrative Joint Ops missions. These new models are visually stunning and capture the sinister, mechanical horror of the Necrons perfectly.
The Terrain
The terrain is a major highlight of this box. Unlike previous seasons, the new Tomb World terrain pieces feature intricate, alien designs with a focus on claustrophobic, close-quarters combat. The set includes 25 pieces, from walls and pillars to teleport pads and a sarcophagus, all designed to create a cohesive and immersive tabletop. The new terrain is highly modular and even includes a matching game board, making it easy to set up cinematic battles right out of the box.
The Rules and Missions
The set comes with an 80-page Tomb World Dossier that provides all the necessary lore, rules, and mission packs to start playing. The inclusion of Joint Ops and Adversary Ops mission packs allows for cooperative and solo play, where players can work together to defeat a Necron Host controlled by the game’s rules. This adds a fantastic new dimension to the Kill Team experience, moving beyond standard player-versus-player combat.
These products will be available for pre-order on Saturday, August 30th, around 1 p.m. EST in the States on Games Workshop’s website, with a shelf release date of Saturday, September 13th, 2025. This set comes with the hefty GW Price as well, $250 CAD$300, and approximately £170 €200.
