Game Workshop Announces Warhammer Quest: Darkwater

A new quest has begun! Games Workshop has officially announced the next thrilling cooperative dungeon-crawler in the popular Warhammer Quest series: Warhammer Quest: Darkwater. Prepare your heroes, for a perilous expedition awaits in the corrupted depths of the Mortal Realms.

Setting the Scene: Corruption in Ghyran

Warhammer Quest: Darkwater takes the action to the realm of Ghyran, the Realm of Life, promising a grim adventure within the ruins of the Jade Abbey.

  • The Quest: You and up to three companions will lead a band of adventurers into the Abbey to root out a sinister corruption at its heart.
  • The Location: The Jade Abbey is a sacred place now threatened, and the box art strongly hints at a flooded environment, which ties directly into the ‘Darkwater’ title and the theme of decay.
  • The Foe: All signs point to the malevolent influence of the Chaos God Nurgle, the Great Lord of Decay. Expect to face off against bubo-covered enemies, including Pestigors (Nurgle Beastmen), and other foul Maggotkin warriors.

The Heroes of the Quest

The announcement artwork gives us a glimpse of the intrepid—and distinctly old-school fantasy-styled—band of heroes you’ll be leading. This diverse warband suggests an attempt to focus on the more classic, non-Stormcast characters of the Cities of Sigmar.

The four apparent heroes include:

  • A Freeguild Knight/Captain: Featuring baroque armor and a golden helm crest, reminiscent of old-school fantasy knights.
  • A Duardin (Dwarf) Ranger: Armed with dual axes, perhaps representing a Dispossessed character.
  • A Warrior with a Two-Handed Sword: Clad in plate armor.
  • A Water-Channeling Sorceress: Wielding a sword that appears to be streaming elemental water, an impractical but visually striking choice for a flooded dungeon.

The aesthetic of these heroes has an intentional feel of classic 80s fantasy, contrasting the higher-fantasy elements of their Nurgle foes.

What We Know So Far

  • Game Type: Cooperative dungeon-crawling board game.
  • Setting: The Mortal Realms of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, specifically the realm of Ghyran.
  • Central Mission: Cleansing the corruption from the ruins of the Jade Abbey.
  • Antagonists: The forces of Chaos, primarily the plague-ridden followers of Nurgle (including new Pestigors).
  • Player Count: Cooperative play for up to four companions.

While official details on the gameplay mechanics and full contents are still to come, Darkwater is a follow-up to previous successes like Cursed City and Blackstone Fortress, ensuring a compelling, miniature-heavy experience.

Hopes and Hype for Fans

The announcement has generated considerable excitement, particularly for two key points:

  1. New Miniatures: The enemy lineup includes new Pestigor sculpts, which is significant as Beastmen have been largely integrated into the Warhammer: The Old World system. This box is likely to debut fantastic new models for both the heroes and the Nurgle forces.
  2. Classic Fantasy Vibe: The heroes’ aesthetic has been noted for its “Old World” and 80s fantasy feel, which is a major draw for long-time fans of the franchise’s roots.

Stay Tuned!

Games Workshop has stated that more details on Warhammer Quest: Darkwater will be released in the coming weeks. Be sure to keep an eye on official channels for information on the full contents, gameplay, and, most critically, the pre-order date—given the swift sell-out of past Warhammer Quest titles, demand is expected to be extremely high!
