Total Chaos Unleashed: Psychological Horror Masterpiece Arrives on PC and Consoles
In a thrilling surprise announcement during the recent Xbox Partner Preview, publisher Apogee Entertainment and developer Trigger Happy Interactive revealed that their highly anticipated first-person psychological survival horror game, Total Chaos, is available now!
What began as an award-winning total conversion mod for Doom II has evolved into a full, standalone experience, bringing its aggressively tense atmosphere and deep survival mechanics to a whole new audience on PC and consoles.
From Modding Legend to Console Reality
Total Chaos is set in the desolate, decaying nightmare of Fort Oasis, an island community abandoned by its coal miners. Players are thrust into this void, where reality crumbles and every dark corner harbors monstrosities. The game’s journey from a celebrated Doom II mod (known for pushing the GZDoom engine to its absolute limits) to a full console and PC release is a testament to the vision of developer Sam Prebble, who is also known for his work on the high-octane shooter Turbo Overkill.
The standalone version meticulously retains the mod’s spine-tingling atmosphere while layering on modern features, creating a horror experience that blends classic survival horror hallmarks with a frantic, first-person perspective.
Key Features of Fort Oasis
The full release brings several elements that define it as a deep survival experience:
- Survival Mechanics: Players must scavenge for resources to craft weapons and healing items. The experience is challenging, requiring players to manage crucial status effects like Health, Stamina, and even Madness, which adds a layer of psychological stress to the gameplay loop.
- Haunting Atmosphere: The game achieves its horrific effect through dimly lit, claustrophobic environments and exceptional sound design. Eerie rings and far-off noises keep players constantly on edge, making even the supposedly “safe” areas feel ominous.
- Combat and Evasion: While the game is rooted in survival, it carries some of its Doom DNA, offering players the means to fight back with melee and ranged weapons. However, combat is scrappy and requires careful timing and evasion, emphasizing that you are never truly safe.
- Star-Studded Soundscapes: Adding significantly to the sense of dread is the inclusion of legendary composer Akira Yamaoka, best known for his iconic work on the Silent Hill series. Yamaoka contributed an original theme and end-credits track, ensuring the auditory experience is as unsettling as the visuals.
Availability
Total Chaos is available today as a surprise launch for PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox players can also jump right into the nightmare via Xbox Game Pass with Xbox Play Anywhere support. A dedicated SteamVR version is also planned for a later release.
If you are a fan of immersive, resource-scare survival horror experiences, the descent into the madness of Fort Oasis has officially begun. Don’t wait—the silence is deafening, and the shadows are waiting.
