WizKids Announces “The Cask”

The carnival is roaring above, but deep in the catacombs, a deadly game of cat and mouse is about to begin. WizKids has officially announced The Cask, a tense new board game adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s chilling classic, “The Cask of Amontillado.”

If you have ever fancied yourself a master of revenge—or perhaps a survivor of great cunning—this is the tabletop experience you have been waiting for.

A Tale of Revenge on the Tabletop

“The Cask of Amontillado” is arguably Poe’s most perfect short story. It tells the tale of Montresor, who lures his drunken rival, Fortunato, into the family crypts with the promise of rare Amontillado sherry, only to wall him up alive.

WizKids is translating this claustrophobic narrative into a game of deduction, bluffing, and tile placement.

“The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” — Edgar Allan Poe

Gameplay: The Mason vs. The Victim

Designed by the acclaimed Hjalmar Hach (known for hits like Photosynthesis, The King’s Dilemma, and Railroad Ink), The Cask is an asymmetrical experience. While the exact player count and intricate rules are still being teased, the core premise relies on the psychological duel between the two main characters.

Here is what we know about the mechanics:

  • Asymmetrical Objectives: One player takes on the role of Montresor, intent on chaining their victim to the wall. The other plays Fortunato, desperate to identify the true Amontillado and escape the catacombs before the final brick is laid.

  • Hidden Information: The game utilizes hidden movement or hidden objective mechanics. Fortunato must deduce where the wine—and the danger—lies, while Montresor must mislead him without revealing his murderous intent too early.

  • Tile Placement: Players will likely physically manipulate the board, placing tiles to represent the winding, damp corridors of the catacombs, effectively shrinking the play space and increasing the tension as the game progresses.

Why You Should Be Excited

There are plenty of horror games on the market, but The Cask stands out for a few specific reasons:

  1. The Designer: Hjalmar Hach is a master of creating games that offer deep strategic choices with simple rulesets. His involvement suggests this won’t just be a thematic gimmick, but a solid mechanical puzzle.

  2. Literary Horror: Rather than jump scares or zombies, this game leans into Gothic dread. It captures the psychological horror of being trapped, which is a rare emotion to capture successfully in board gaming.

  3. The Production: WizKids is known for high-quality components. Expect dark, atmospheric artwork that captures the niter-hanging walls of the Italian crypts.

Release Information

WizKids is aiming to release The Cask soon, likely targeting the Halloween seasonal market or a major convention release window. It is expected to be a lower price-point, small-box game, making it a perfect “filler” game for game nights that need a touch of the macabre.
