Own a Piece of TSR History: Greg Irons’ AD&D Coloring Album Art Heads to the Block

Calling all art collectors and old-school dungeon crawlers! A legendary piece of tabletop history is about to find a new home. Heritage Auctions has officially listed the original wraparound cover painting for The Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Album for their April 4, 2026, Comic Cover Art Showcase.

This isn’t just a piece of gaming memorabilia; it’s a high-octane collision between the 1960s psychedelic underground and the birth of modern fantasy.

The Artist: The Wild Life of Greg Irons

The man behind the brush, Greg Irons, was a titan of the counterculture art scene. His resume reads like a “who’s who” of 20th-century pop culture:

  • Rock & Roll Roots: He started out designing iconic posters for Bill Graham at the Fillmore, working with legends like The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin.

  • Animation & Comix: He contributed to The Beatles’ trippy masterpiece Yellow Submarine and became a staple of the underground “comix” world through titles like Slow Death.

  • The TSR Connection: In a rare crossover, Irons brought his gritty, detailed style to the burgeoning world of TSR Hobbies to illustrate a coloring book that was far more than it seemed.

More Than a Coloring Book

The Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Album is a white whale for collectors. Unlike your average coloring book, this was a fully playable adventure module penned by the father of D&D himself, Gary Gygax.

Tragically, Irons’ career was cut short when he passed away at age 37 in Thailand. His influence was so deeply felt that the legendary Alan Moore even dedicated Swamp Thing #39 to his memory.

The Art

This massive original work is a stunning example of Irons’ mastery.

Pro Tip: Rare original AD&D art from this era—especially from an artist with Irons’ “street cred”—is an blue-chip investment for serious hobby historians.
