Fantasy Flight Games Discontinues Descent: Legends of the Dark

Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) officially announced yesterday, April 9, 2026, that it is sunsetting its ambitious dungeon-crawler, Descent: Legends of the Dark.

For fans who have been trekking through the realm of Terrinoth since the game’s massive debut in 2021, the news marks a bittersweet conclusion to a series that aimed to redefine the “app-integrated” board game experience.

Why the Sun is Setting on Terrinoth

The decision to discontinue the line wasn’t due to a lack of creative passion, but rather the harsh realities of modern manufacturing. In their official “The End of a Legend” statement, FFG cited a “perfect storm” of economic factors:

  • Unsustainable Costs: Between the skyrocketing price of high-quality plastic miniatures and the complex logistics of producing massive 3D terrain, the game became too expensive to manufacture at a sustainable margin.

  • App Development Hurdles: Maintaining and expanding a sophisticated digital companion app requires constant investment. FFG noted that even if they sold every copy, the rising development costs meant the project was no longer financially viable.

  • The Fate of Act III: Perhaps the most painful news for completionists is that Act III is officially cancelled. While the team explored digital-only or “print-on-demand” alternatives to finish the trilogy, none were found to be feasible.

“Simply put, the game is too expensive to make. Between ever-increasing manufacturing costs, lengthy and pricey app development timelines, and global economic shifts making everything more expensive to produce, it became abundantly clear that continuing to make this game is just not feasible. This is far from the outcome we wanted – again, we all love this game and hoped to see it grow for years to come – but even if we were to sell every last copy, we would still ultimately be doing so at a loss. In a fiercely-competitive board game industry, that simply isn’t sustainable, and because of circumstances outside of FFG’s control, there are no adjustments we could make that could lower costs enough to continue printing the game.”

What This Means for Current Players

If you already own the core game or the The Betrayer’s War (Act II) expansion, don’t panic. Your game isn’t going anywhere just yet.

  • App Support: FFG has committed to keeping the Legends of the Dark app available and supported on various platforms. You can still play through Acts I and II in their entirety.

  • No New Content: There will be no further digital updates, new quests, or physical expansions for this specific iteration of Descent.

  • Availability: Retail stock is expected to dry up quickly as collectors look to secure the remaining physical copies before they become “out-of-print” relics.

The Silver Lining: Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent

While the board game chapter is closing, the world of Terrinoth is migrating to a new medium. FFG took this opportunity to remind fans of the upcoming video game, Terrinoth: Heroes of Descent, developed by Artefacts Studio.

Launching later this spring on PC, Mac, and consoles, this standalone title aims to capture the tactical combat and hero-driven storytelling of the board game without the burden of 40-minute physical setups. It features:

  • 8 playable heroes with unique skill trees.

  • 20 handcrafted dungeons to explore.

  • Full voice acting and a narrative-heavy campaign.

A Legacy of Innovation

Descent: Legends of the Dark will likely be remembered as one of the most polarizing and ambitious projects in FFG’s history. It pushed the boundaries of what a board game could be, blending tactile 3D environments with a living digital world.

Though the journey of Brynn, Galaden, and the rest of the party has been cut short in its physical form, the impact the game had on “hybrid gaming” will likely be felt for years to come. For now, heroes, it’s time to pack up the 3D stairs—but keep your dice ready. Terrinoth always has a way of coming back.

Final Note: If you’ve been on the fence about picking up The Betrayer’s War, now is the time to act before secondary market prices begin to climb.
