  1. I never get to listen ‘live’ but always make sure to listen as soon as the podcast is released in the wild. Keep up the excellent work guys!

I have some clarifications (as I know them) for the new Batman: Gotham City Chronicles Kickstarter. The game is closely based on the last Conan Board Game, which Monolith also Kickstarted back in 2015, and I think I received mine last July.

It is a One Versus Many style game, where there is an Overlord type player who controls all the ‘bad guys’ and then the other players, 1 or more, control the Heroes and try to win scenarios.

There is an ‘optional buy’ to add on the Versus mode at $35, which turns the game into a 1v1 Skirmish style game, but evidently you MUST have that add-on in order to play the game in that style.

It has me very tempted. Being a truly Kickstarter Exclusive means it will never see retail so buy now, or spend a fortune on the secondary market like eBay. Their reasoning is pretty sound as to ‘why’ only on Kickstarter, based on their last game having to sell at a loss to distributors to get it to the retailers at near the same price-point that people would be willing to buy once on store shelves.

*** Why Kickstarter Exclusive? For a very simple reason: the game contains a lot of work and high-quality components on top of the cost of the Batman license.

To be able to offer you this game at a reasonable price, we had to cut our margins as low as possible. We cut them so much, in fact, that we cannot reduce them any further. Therefore, if we were to sell this game to a distributor, who then would sell it to retailers, the final price of the base game for you gamers would be multiplied by 2.5. That would be more than $350 for the base game only!

We talk from experience as we offered Conan, our first Kickstarter project, through retail a few years back, and it turns out, that we had to lower our selling price to the distributor so much that we did not make any money on this. And you will understand that this is not a very good business model for a company. ***
