Is a New Heroquest Re-imagine In The Works From Restoration Games?

Normally we here at DDO Players do not report on rumors, but this one was too juicy not too!

Restoration Games has filed a trademark under the name HeroQuest Legacies. The trademark that was filed covers a wide range of things,  “tabletop hobby battle games in the nature of battle, war, and skirmish games” So one would assume that is likely to be a reboot or continuation of the classic 1980s HeroQuest board game.

A bit of background for those not familiar with the Heroquest IP Saga

HeroQuest was originally a collaboration between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley. Games Workshop allowed the HeroQuest trademark to elapse, and it was then picked up by tabletop RPG designer Greg Stafford (founder of Chaosium Inc), who used it as the name of there RPG system. After Stafford’s death in 2018, the IP was picked up by Moon Design Publications, whom are now own the Runequest TM as well.

Those of us (and who isn’t) A fan of Heroquest have had our hopes up for a new version, we had a Kickstarter back in 2013 for a 25th Edition  Gamezone, a Spanish company that tried to propose The Campaign which was canceled following a legal copyright claim by publisher Moon Design Publications. This project was always murky at best, with Gamezone claiming they had rights to the name in Spain.

Who better than the publisher who has brought up to date Top Race under the name of Downforce , Fireball Island, and soon will see the return of Dark Tower  Rob Daviau is the Chief Restoration Officer so it would be in good hands, very very good hands.

This could be just the first step to seeing if this is possible, I’ve reached out to Restoration Games but I have not heard back as of yet, I’ll update this post when I do.   UPDATE! I have heard back from Restoration Games.

Nothing to report. It’s purely speculative and preliminary and isn’t indicative of any game we’ll actually be doing, merely that it’s something we’d be interested in doing down the road. Unfortunately, it’s a public process, so, when folks notice it gets more attention than it warrants. You’ll note other trademark applications under our name that we secured long before this one that we haven’t done either. – Justin Jacobson Preisdent Restoration Games.

Which is of course what I had figured all along, the first tiny step into seeing this is even possible, so we still have a slight glimmer of hope in the distance.

I can’t post about Heroquest and not let the bard himself explain why this is the best news.
