Baldur’s Gate 4 is Coming, But Not From Who You Think: WotC Clears the Air
Ever since Larian Studios took their well-deserved victory lap after Baldur’s Gate 3 and announced they were moving on to new projects, the biggest question on every adventurer’s mind has been: “Who will make Baldur’s Gate 4?” The rumor mill has been churning nonstop, and one name that kept surfacing was Giant Skull, the new AAA studio from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen.
Well, it’s time to put that theory to rest. In a recent interview, Wizards of the Coast President John Hight finally cleared the air, providing some much-needed clarity on the future of D&D video games and squashing one of the biggest rumors in the process.
Giant Skull is Forging a Different Path
The speculation made sense on the surface. Giant Skull is a new, high-profile AAA studio that announced earlier this year it was working on a Dungeons & Dragons game. With Baldur’s Gate 4 also confirmed to be in Hasbro’s future plans, it was a logical leap for fans to connect the two.
However, John Hight was direct and unambiguous in a new interview with The Game Business, stating that the two projects are entirely separate.
“Baldur’s Gate [3] is an incredible game; and of course, we’re going to do a successor,” Hight confirmed. “This [Giant Skull project] is not the successor to that game.”
This single statement definitively decouples the two projects, allowing us to see Wizards of the Coast’s broader strategy more clearly.
A Different Kind of D&D Adventure
So if Giant Skull isn’t making the next great CRPG, what are they making? According to Hight, they’re building a D&D experience designed to bring the beloved fantasy universe to an even wider audience. The project is described as an action-adventure game, a significant departure from the deep, turn-based mechanics of a CRPG like Baldur’s Gate.
“We go to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring D&D to a very broad audience,” Hight explained.
This points to a two-pronged approach for D&D’s video game future:
- Continue the deep, complex, and story-rich CRPG legacy with a future Baldur’s Gate 4.
- Expand the brand’s reach with a more accessible, action-oriented title from Giant Skull that can appeal to players who may not be versed in the intricacies of character sheets and dice rolls.
The Long Road to Baldur’s Gate 4
While it’s thrilling to have official confirmation that a successor to Baldur’s Gate 3 is in the cards, we should all settle in for a long wait. Hight’s comments suggest that Wizards of the Coast may still be in the process of selecting the right studio to take on the monumental task of following Larian’s masterpiece.
Furthermore, modern AAA game development takes time. Considering Giant Skull was only formed in 2024, their action-adventure title likely won’t see the light of day before 2029 at the earliest. A project like Baldur’s Gate 4, which may not have even entered pre-production, is probably even further down the road.
For now, the great developer hunt continues. But at least we know one thing for sure: the future of D&D video games is looking both varied and very exciting.
